How many Praziquantel tablets for my cat's tapeworms and how often?

However, I would encourage you to call your primary vet and talk about your options. If your outdoor cats have tapeworms, they very likely have roundworms and/or hookworms as well, so ideally the cats should be treated with something a bit more broad-spectrum. You're right that vets certainly prefer doing an exam on each animal prior to dispensing medication (we are legally required to have a "doctor/patient relationship" to dispense medication).....but depending on your relationship with your vet, some vets may make exceptions when it comes to deworming outdoor/feral cats. No, it's not too early to give Twinkie another dose; however pyrantel pamoate does not kill tapeworms. Praziquantel does, and that available by prescription from your vet. Unfortunately it's illegal for use to prescribe any drugs or give dosage instructions without seeing the cat in person. You will need to take her to a vet to get praziquantel, and they can give you the dose and schedule. Best of luck.

Hello and thank you for using pet coach. Tapeworms are typically treated with a drug known as praziquantel. The drug that we use at our Clinic to treat tapeworm is called drontal Plus. Only a single dose with drontal Plus is typically required. A follow-up dose 1-3 weeks after the initial treatment may be given if needed. I hope this helps! The Praziquantel should kill the tapeworm within a few hours. The tapeworm will be eliminated with all its segments (proglottids) with the feces. I would think this happens within 2 days at the longest.

Tapeworms are relatively straight forward to treat, so sorry you are having such a hard time. However you should do the following: 1) Give tapeworm medicine - Praziquantel (you may have to visit your vet for this if not available over the counter). Typically you only need 1 dose. 2) Get Boo-butiful on a good monthly flea preventative. My top recommendation is Revolution topical or Advantage Multi. Tapeworms come from your pet either ingesting a flea or eating another pets poop with "live" tapeworms in it. I hope this helps you get rid of your fur baby's pesty friends!

Great question! No, one pill is not enough. Due to the life cycle of the worms, Chiron will need another Drontal tablet two weeks after the first one was given. This will kill the worms who had not yet hatched from eggs when the first tablet was given. I would get another Drontal for him. Best of luck.
