My cat poops a lot, but it's healthy. Is his food quality an issue?

Normally cats defecate (poop) about once per day. If your cat is pooping more than that, you may be feeding a diet that is exceptionally high in insoluble fiber, which means that the fiber in the food cannot be digested and is passed out of the body. Typically, low quality grocery store brands fall into this category. Look for a higher quality food that is labeled to be lower in carbohydrates in order to decrease the volume and frequency of defecation.

No he's perfect. We are getting used to many dogs and cats being fat. His coat is shiny, he has a good waist and there is plenty of muscle over his spine. It does sound like he poops more than normal. I would try a higher calorie food. There may be excessive fiber in the food you are feeding causing that much poop. Gradually mix the new food with the old one over a week or so to prevent stomach upset. I'm pleased to see such a fit, active dog. Hello there. As log as Charlie has good energy, is eating and drinking, is not having any vomiting, and is not having trouble with bowel movements I wouldn't worry about it. If it appears that he is constipated or bowel movements are painful for him, you could add extra water in with him food to help hydrate him, or take him to the veterinarian for evaluation. It likely is his diet. A lot of the holistic or grain free diets can cause excessive stool production. It isn't something that is a medical concern however, especially i the stools are normal consistency. Perhaps you can let him stay outside for a longer period of time so that he is allowed to completely empty his colon before coming back in. Otherwise, just keep an eye on Asian and I hope that he continues to do well. If his stools do change in consistency or have visible worms, then its best to take him to your vet for treatment. Yes, some cats may poop twice a day - their schedules can vary a bit, just like people :) As long as her stools are normal in color and consistency and she is acting normal, I wouldn't be concerned about this at all.

White stool can be seen with a significant decrease in bile flow due to severe liver or gallbladder disease, but it doesn't sound like this is the case for Thumbs since he is otherwise healthy. Liver or gallbladder disease would also likely cause vomiting, decreased appetite and changes on lab work. It is more likely that the change in the color of his stool is related to diet and as long as he has been deemed healthy by your veterinarian it is not likely anything to worry about.

Poop smell is dependent on the type of intestinal bacteria your kitty harbors. these are good bacteria, but some just smell awful. The same is true for bacteria in his anal glands. He may not be covering his poop enough, because he himself ma be disgusted with it, so only does a half-hearted job. If he is otherwise healthy then there is nothing to worry about. A bottle of Febreze may be your only weapon against the smell. Sometimes changing food, especially changing to wet (canned) food, pate-style, may change the intestinal flora and the smell changes too.
