Is my 1.5-year-old Ragdoll cat's every-other-day poop normal?

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 14.2 lbs

My 14.2 lb Ragdoll only has a bowel movement every other day. Is this ok. He is a year and a half old. He eats dry food at night and a half can of 3,oz. wet food in the day.

Hello there. As log as Charlie has good energy, is eating and drinking, is not having any vomiting, and is not having trouble with bowel movements I wouldn't worry about it. If it appears that he is constipated or bowel movements are painful for him, you could add extra water in with him food to help hydrate him, or take him to the veterinarian for evaluation. It sounds like Charlie may be constipated. I would recommend taking him to the veterinarian to check. If he is constipated he may need an enema and medication to make his stool soft. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

If Charlie is acting normally, no vomiting/normal appetite/normal energy/no straining, you can try adding a teaspoon or two of canned pumpkin to his food to increase the fiber which can aide in mild constipation. If however he develops other symptoms a trip to the vet is recommended. Provide him with plenty of water and sometimes a long walk may help move things along!

Hello. The stool is a little dry, but otherwise looks normal. You can try increasing the amount of fluids he takes in by offering low sodium broths or stocks, tuna water, & adding some canned wet food to his diet. Because of his underlying issues, he may just not be taking in enough water on his own, but you do not need to force water down him. Not covering things up is an individual trait in some cats. Some seem to want to dig all the litter out while others are content to leave things be on top. Most cats fall somewhere in the middle & do a pretty good job covering things. My cat poops every 3 days with hair. Is this normal or constipation?

Some cats do not defecate every day. Pooping every other day or every 3 days can be normal as long as the cat doesn't struggle to pass stools and doesn't have any gastro-intestinal problems like vomiting, lack of appetite etc. Also, hair in poo is fairly normal, particularily in long hair cats. You can get a paste for her at your vets or a pet shop to avoid hair balls.

There is no set time frame, however a cat should poop at least once every two days (if it does not eat much) and it should urinate at least once daily. If your cat is not urinating at least once a day and not eliminating properly , it should be seen by a veterinarian for an exam. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Moosh is pooping every 3-4 days and he does not have any problems to defecate it may be normal for him. However, if he is showing signs of constipation, like straining, painful defecation, very large volume of stools it is not normal and should be address. The easiest way to avoid constipation is adding fibre to the diet. You can try food supplements (can be veterinary or human product) containing inulin or psylium. If this does not work, your vet should able to prescribe a mild laxative for Moosh
