My stray cat has pinkish-red bumps near its anus. What is it?

Hello! That bump looks a little swollen and red, and it could simply be a wound. I would clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and keep an eye on it. If the swelling gets larger, Chiky starts having trouble passing feces, she starts scooting on her behind, licking the area a lot, and/or you see pus, then I would take her into the vet. In that case, I would be concerned that the wound may be infected, or it could be something else causing the swelling such as infected and impacted anal sacs or intestinal worms. Poor guy. The fact that he is so young, and the location of the bump, suggests that he may have unfortunately been bitten by an insect in this area. If he is not licking it excessively causing redness of the skin or seems bothered by it, I would leave it be for now and monitor it for the next few days to see if it starts to resolve on its own. If it seems irritating, then you can try applying a very small amount of Neosporin on the area and play with him for 15 mins to allow it time to absorb. Do not apply too much where he can lick it off and cause stomach upset. If it happens to not be improving after 4-7 days, then I would take him in to your vet to have him checked out so they can get a closer look at the area. Other possible causes is a foreign body with subsequent inflammation (granuloma) or an allergic skin reaction. Possibilities include inflammatory disease, cancer, immune mediated disease, an infection, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may have to take samples from the lesions to try to find out. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! To orient you to his anatomy from your picture: to left by tail in the black fur is the anus (larger flesh colored circle). Going towards the right into the white fur the light pink tubular structure is the prepuce (sheath where penis lives) and the redder center is the penis itself. Everything in your picture is normal. Based on its location, this could also be a mammary gland tumor which in most cases are malignant. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Hello, and thank you for your question. It sounds like Jimmy may have an anal gland abscess. Other possibilities include a mass such as a tumour or wart that has become infected. I would advise taking Jimmy to the vet within the next 12 hours, as I worry about infection that could worsen if this goes untreated. If it is an anal gland abscess, the vet can prescribe antibiotics to treat it, without surgery. If it is a defined mass, the vet may recommend a test called a fine needle aspirate to find out what it is exactly, and go from there. They may also recommend anti-inflammatory pain medication to keep him comfortable while the area heals. In the meantime, you can try gently cleaning the area with mild soap and warm water, if he lets you. If Jimmy is trying to lick at his anus, I would place an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent him from causing further trauma to the area. I hope this helps, and that Jimmy feels better soon.
