My cat keeps pawing his mouth after eating. Is it a vet emergency?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 years and 9 months old | 11 lbs

Hello. My cat keeps pawing at his mouth, it seems like it right after he eats. I don’t know if he scratched it and it’s irritating him or if his gums are sore, or if it’s anything else. Would you recommend taking him somewhere immediately or just keep and eye on him to see if anything changes by tomorrow. Also should I withhold food until later or tomorrow to see if it heals more?..

I would get him in as soon as you can, but not necessarily as an emergency. It could probably wait until Monday. There good be an infected tooth, inflammation in the gums, a small ulcer or mass, or something else causing this behavior.
