How long do cats shed parvo and need quarantine after recovery?

Parvo virus in cats (also known as panleukopenia) is a very serious illness with a poor prognosis. If Blue was not tested for feline panleukopenia and his diagnosis was an educated guess, it may be that the bloody stool and vomiting were caused by some other bacterial or viral infection, or intestinal parasites. I do hope that he continues to get better and go back to completely normal! A true panleukopenia virus infected cat can continue to shed virus particles for 6 weeks. I do recommend that he be seen by the vet to start vaccinations next week to prevent other viral infections that are prevented with proper vaccination. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dogs can shed the virus for up to 14 days after they have clinically resolved the infection. The other problem with the parvo-virus is that it is very hearty, meaning that it can survive a very long time in the environment. It can survive freezing and high temperatures, therefore if you had a dog in your yard with parvo-virus, then any dog that comes into your yard for years later is at risk. Therefore you have to be very carefully with new puppies in your yard/house after having a dog with parvo. Make sure all animals are fully vaccinated. Best of luck with your little one!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm glad everything tested negative for Kitty. We do not have an test for panleukopenia. And we do not test healthy cats for it. Cats with panleukopenia are sick: vomiting, diarrhea, low white blood cells. We sometimes use the dog Parvo snap tests to test cats who are sick that we think may have it but we usually diagnose it based on signs and blood work (CBC=complete blood count). I would keep her separate from your other cats for 2 weeks. I am assuming your vet started her vaccines and gave her the first FVRCP vaccine which has panleukopenia in it. She should have a second booster 3 weeks after the first one. If you want to be 100% safe, keep her separate until 2 weeks after the 2nd booster (5 weeks total, that is a long time!). But I would think that if she had no signs in 2 weeks she is likely fine. I usually see stray cats or new kittens pass upper respiratory viruses more often than panleukemia. I hope this helps!

For this reason, keeping the puppies, and their environments, separate for at least 2 weeks after Roxy is completely healed is recommended, and then I would clean Roxy's environment aggressively with bleach water, and keep the puppies away from the 'infected' environment for a week while you are cleaning it. The other puppy SHOULD be OK because she is vaccinated, however until she has her third set I would keep them separate, because as the first vaccines are being given, and as the mother's immunity is wearing down, there will be times when the second puppy is at risk. Thanks for using PetCoach. Depending on the severity of the couse of disease, it can take some puppies several weeks to fully recover. Be sure to feed the food her vet recommends and offer small amounts of food frequently. Do not allow her to eat all she wants at one time. Zoe may be contagious to other puppies for up to 3-4 weeks so should be kept away from other dogs and pups. Depending on how she is doing the vet may recommend vaccination anywhere from 1-3 weeks after she starts eating. She cannot contract Parvo again but does need to be vaccinated against other diseases. I would not recommend to get the puppy who did not get Parvo. It’s possible that he may still break with this highly contagious virus. For the puppy that survived Parvo, he will likely be fine. Long term, most dogs experience no organ damage or side effects. This puppy is still shedding the Parvo virus and will continue to shed the virus for 6 months in it’s feces. The virus will live for roughly 1 year in the soil. That means you cannot take this puppy out in public where it may expose other puppies who are not vaccinated for at least 6 months. That also means your yard will be contaminated for at least 1.5 years minimum so you cannot have any dogs over to play who are not fully vaccinated or else they run the risk of contracting the virus. You don’t want to harm any other pets. He also cannot play with any dogs who are not fully vaccinated for 6 months. The vaccine is highly effective and it’s unlikely that a fully vaccinated pet will get sick (but keep in mind nothing is a 100% guarantee). I'm so sorry that your last cat passed away from panleukopenia. This is a parvovirus that is passed through various secretions and can survive fairly readily in the environment. As a result, it's virtually impossible to fully disinfect all materials - particularly carpet, rugs, and upholstered furniture. Hard, nonporous surfaces are much easier to disinfect with bleach diluted with water 1:32 and left on the cleaned surface for at least 5 minutes. Since this parvovirus can survive for up to a year, I would not take the chance of bringing Rag home until he's completed his entire vaccine series.
