My cat had an enema. Is it normal for her to be in pain and not eat?

Since Minnie received fluids today that will help maintain her hydration. I would not worry about no appetite for this evening since she had such a big day. If she does not eat tomorrow or continues to vomit, then I would have her rechecked!

Poor Baby! If you are not comfortable giving the enema, I recommend to call your veterinarian and discuss your concerns. At this point, she may need more care than an enema. She may need fluids or a sedated enema. I also recommend to discuss a specific food made by Royal Canin called Fiber Response. It is formulated for cats with constipation and many cats will get relief within a few days. This diet baby needed lifelong. It’s definitely concerning that Sarisin still has not defecated and is not eating despite treatment. I am wondering if any diagnostics have been performed - constipation can be secondary to ingestion of a foreign object or kidney disease. Blood work and x-rays might help determine why the current treatments aren’t working. I would definitely check in with your vet before giving an enema - not all enemas are safe for cats, and even a water enema can be difficult to administer. Hope your kitty is feeling better soon!

Keep Lucky hydrated. If he eats dry food, mix in some warm water or low sodium chicken broth. Warm the food slightly to stimulate the appetite. Mix in a teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) once or twice daily. Unflavored PediaLyte can be mixed with water to make a 50/50 solution. Monitor for straining to defecate, lethargy or loss of appetite. IF he doesn't eat for 2+ days have him rechecked by your veterinarian to prevent serious liver related complications. An appetite stimulant can be dispensed to jumpstart his appetite.

Yes and no. If Saber was anesthetized and had a manual clean out where lots of poop was removed, it can be normal not to see them poop for 1-2 days afterwards. If the cat had an enema and only a normal amount of poop was passed, I would expect the cat should have regular bowel movements each day. It's certainly not normal if it's been longer that 48 hours, and Saber still haven't pooped. Unfortunately, constipation can be a chronic problem in cats, and I recommend having Saber seen by a vet again for his constipation if he hasn't passed feces in more than 48 hours.

After 3 days, the recovery from anesthesia should be gone and she should be feeling like her old self and normal. For her to not have an appetite at this point is concerning something else is going on and it is not part of the surgery recovery. I would recommend taking her to a vet for a check up. They can take her temperature and make sure she is not dehydrated. They can see if there is an infection or a virus that is making her feel bad. Continue to do broth or you can try tuna or the juice to encourage her to keep fluids in until you get her seen. I would also try to keep the other cats away from her so she can rest.

This sounds pretty normal. The colon doesn't necessarily have to be completely full for him to defecate. If you are cutting down his portions he may not have to defecate as much. You can continue to cut his portions down. He is definitely overweight at 16 pounds. I don't know if your vet suggested this but I would recommend you add some fiber into his diet - it is best to do this by using a high fiber prescription cat food like Hill's w/d or r/d. I personally would put him on one of those diets as his own source of food and not just use it as an additive. These diets will also make him lose weight. And he will be able to eat more instead of you cutting his regular food down until he is eating almost nothing. I suggest you speak to your vet about this. You can continue the Laxatone.
