My cat isn't pooping a few days after an enema. Should I worry?

Is it normal for a cat not to poop a few days after a successful enema?

Yes and no. If Saber was anesthetized and had a manual clean out where lots of poop was removed, it can be normal not to see them poop for 1-2 days afterwards. If the cat had an enema and only a normal amount of poop was passed, I would expect the cat should have regular bowel movements each day. It's certainly not normal if it's been longer that 48 hours, and Saber still haven't pooped. Unfortunately, constipation can be a chronic problem in cats, and I recommend having Saber seen by a vet again for his constipation if he hasn't passed feces in more than 48 hours.

No, that is not normal especially if he is eating well. I suggest you call your vet tomorrow for a follow-up. If he is straining to defecate or having any other abnormal symptoms you should take him to an ER now.

It can be normal. Give her some time. As long as she is not straining to poop she is OK. Just keep giving the medications as directed. If she starts vomiting, not eating or is straining to poop then you will have to take her in on emergency.

Hello, thank you for your question about Charlotte.

I suspect that after having the enema procedure and three bowel movements Charlotte has almost emptied her colon. As long as Charlotte is still acting well - eating, drinking, and not lethargic I would recommend continuing to monitor her. If Charlotte is showing any of these symptoms or she is straining in her litterbox I would recommend having her reevaluated by your veterinarian.

How long can my cat go without pooping before I should worry?

A cat can go up to 48 hours without pooping, meaning anything past 48 hrs is a cause for concern, especially if you see your pet straining to defecate and nothing coming out. Ideally every pet should have a bowel movement daily, however there can be some slight variations here depending on the GI transit time and diet. I would monitor for signs of straining and also vomiting, lethargy or lack of appetite which means that kitty should be seen for constipation/obstipation. There are also medications and supplements available through your vet (i.e. Laxatone or Lactulose) that can help keep the GI track moving along if this becomes a chronic issue. Also fiber supplementation can be discussed with your vet.

My cat had surgery for string. No poop 3 days later. Should I worry?

It is common for dogs and cats not to pass stool for several days after these types of surgeries - probably due to the drugs used during anesthesia and the lack of food intake before and after the surgery. I usually don't get concerned until 5 days have passed as long as the cat is eating normally, is not vomiting, and is not straining or attempting to defecate. I bet Jones will go in the next couple of days!

My overweight cat hasn't pooped in days after enema. Is this normal?

This sounds pretty normal. The colon doesn't necessarily have to be completely full for him to defecate. If you are cutting down his portions he may not have to defecate as much. You can continue to cut his portions down. He is definitely overweight at 16 pounds. I don't know if your vet suggested this but I would recommend you add some fiber into his diet - it is best to do this by using a high fiber prescription cat food like Hill's w/d or r/d. I personally would put him on one of those diets as his own source of food and not just use it as an additive. These diets will also make him lose weight. And he will be able to eat more instead of you cutting his regular food down until he is eating almost nothing. I suggest you speak to your vet about this. You can continue the Laxatone. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mieko. Anesthesia will slow digestion down so it is common for a cat not to have a bowel movement for a period of time. Once her appetite is back to normal, she should have a bowel movement within a day or two. Encourage her to drink plenty of water as this will soften the stool. Baby Yoda needs to be examined by the veterinarian. Any pet not pooping for 2 days needs to be examined as they may need fluids, enema, stool softners....etc. Constipation can get worse quickly so it is much better to take care of it earlier. Have her examined today. I hope this helps.
