My new cat hurts when I touch his lower rib cage. Is this serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 2 months old

Make cat seems to be discomforted when I stroke over lower part of his rib cage and he has only been like that since he came home today. Do I need to be concerned about this?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think that if this is a consistent finding meaning that Phoenix continues to be like that today and again tomorrow, it is very important to have him evaluated by a veterinarian as it could be something serious causing him pain. It could be pain from one of his ribs or perhaps referred pain from his abdomen. Hopefully this goes away but if not a visit to your veterinarian is indicated. Good luck and have a great day!
