Why is my cat rapidly opening/closing mouth like her jaw is stuck?

My cat is doing a weird mouth motion where she opens and closes her mouth rapidly, like she's trying to get her jaw unstuck or something? It's a very odd thing to try to describe, but I worry that something is wrong with her jaw/mouth or teeth.

Yes, there could be an issue with her teeth or jaw. I suggest you get her to your vet for an exam. If you could take a video with your phone of the behavior she is exhibiting that would be good. That way you can show the vet what she is doing since she may not do it during the exam.

Hello Greg, Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Sorry Kittee is having this issue. She really needs to be seen by a vet. I suggest you video her making this noise to show your vet. If it is only happening when she is chewing them I'm assuming there is a dental issue or some other type of problem in the oral cavity. She could even have a dislocated jaw. I really think a veterinary visit is best in this case.

I highly recommend that you have her evaluated when your veterinarian has decided to proceed with further investigation. If mouth pain due to a dental condition is diagnosed, they can then proceed with therapy based on what they find wrong. I hope they can help her. Mouth pain can be quite distressing. It is possible that Oscar was bitten inside the mouth by an insect such as an ant or bee and this has caused oral pain / irritation. As long as he is eating and drinking ok and the behavior resolves, I would not be too concerned about this. I would monitor him for the next 2-3 days and if the problem resolves, I would not worry about it any further. If the problem persists or worsens, I would have the veterinarian recheck the mouth. He may need to be sedated to have a complete oral examination to make sure something is not stuck in his mouth like a small piece of material like wood, glass, metal, etc. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Is my senior cat's mouth chewing and cracking noise a dental issue?

From your description it sounds like a tooth decay issue. Cats will "chatter" their teeth when they are in pain. Sometimes dental issues are not apparent on a physical exam, but are very obvious on dental x-rays. I would ask your veterinarian if a dental cleaning would be appropriate for Chippy. While she's asleep for her dental cleaning, she could also have x-rays of her skull done if no dental issues are found. To send video, you'll need to set up a consultation, but I honestly don't think it would make a big difference in this situation. Best of luck to you and Chippy!

You need to take Lilo into a vet now, she sounds extremely uncomfortable and it's serious if she's pawing at her jaw. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Why is my cat making chewing motions with nothing in his mouth lately?

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Sam is making a rapid "chattering" movement, that could indicate pain, or less commonly stress. If it's a slower movement more like normal chewing, he may have something stuck in his mouth that he's trying to dislodge, or could have a tooth issue that is causing discomfort and giving him a sensation that there's something that doesn't belong in there. If he's acting otherwise completely normal with a normal appetite, you can watch him for a few more days, but if the behavior continues, (and certainly if you see anything else alarming), then I'd have a vet take a look in case there's something that should be addressed. It could just be normal for him but you should have a vet do an oral examination to make sure he doesn't have a dental problem and/or a problem with the his jaw. If your vet doesn't identify a problem and he is eating and drinking fine then it is probably just normal for him.
