My cat's jaw is lowering rapidly and opening wide. Is it dental pain?

From your description it sounds like a tooth decay issue. Cats will "chatter" their teeth when they are in pain. Sometimes dental issues are not apparent on a physical exam, but are very obvious on dental x-rays. I would ask your veterinarian if a dental cleaning would be appropriate for Chippy. While she's asleep for her dental cleaning, she could also have x-rays of her skull done if no dental issues are found. It sounds like Z has not eaten today, and but that she ate a small amount yesterday so at this point I think you are probably okay to wait. The teeth chattering could be a sign of pain so you should definitely continue with the buprenorphine. If she seems to be in significant pain or if she is very weak or lethargic I'd recommend trying to see an emergency veterinarian. You could try offering some canned food mixed with water via syringe, but don't force the food if she is not interested.
