Why is my cat's jaw clicking when she opens and closes her mouth?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years old

My 3 year old cat started opening and closing her mouth with an odd clicking/snapping sound. She seems in perfect health otherwise, does not display any discomfort, and is eating and drinking fine. But two days ago I heard a strange clicking sound and realized it was coming from her! She was fine in the morning, but in the afternoon the clicking started and hasn't gone away for a couple of days.

It's possible Laika may have an injury to her mouth, jaw or throat, or may be experiencing some respiratory issues. Open mouthed breathing and clicking sounds when moving the jaw are both troubling signs and should be looked at by your vet ASAP.
