My cat isn't pooping after prednisolone. Will he be put down?

This drug can be a little tricky when giving it. Your pets complete medical history should be known before starting this laxative, due to possible complications that can ensue. Because of this, I would not continue its use without consulting with Dewey's primary care veterinarian. It is used in veterinary medicine, but it has certain requirements and cautions with use. Also it should always be dissolved and not given in powder form. As a side, Prednisolone does not have constipation as one of the possible side effects to using this medication. Instead of an enema, I would recommend you first try something that is less involved and likely to help which is giving him about 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin with his meals. Hello. If the blood appeared after you started the prednisolone, then it is possible that it may be irritating the colon. Since I do not know why the steroid was prescribed to your cat, do not stop the medication until you talk to your veterinarian tomorrow. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Galaxy! I recommend cisapride, lactulose and Royal canine fiber response for constipated cats. Sometimes with the prescription diet it eliminates the need for most medications. If she isn't eating I would have her seen today and deobstipated (sedate and remove all feces) before the weekend. Then get the cisaride and food started. Sometimes refractory cases need partial removal of their colons. I wish you the best!

Its very difficult to say for sure based on the picture if that is the cotton from a q-tip. My guess would be probably not. A small amount of cotton like that would probably look indistinguishable by the time it exits the body. Constipation in cats, particularly for long periods like you have described, can be painful and have some serious consequence on their well-being and health. Often the cause the constipation goes undetermined, particularly in younger cats. Sometimes dietary change is all that is required, adding something fibrous into the mix. Other times, there is a motility problem in the GI tract that requires intervention with drugs. Either way, if there is truly bad constipation, Bomi probably requires an enema (multiple, more than likely). An x-ray will be able to reveal the extent of constipation as well as the size of the colon. Sometimes cats with severe constipation require hospitalization to rehydrate them. Once the body is better hydrated, somethings the dry fecal material will loosen and pass more easily. Overall, I wouldn't say this is necessarily an emergency, but I would get her in somewhere by tomorrow. Hope his helps.

This sounds pretty normal. The colon doesn't necessarily have to be completely full for him to defecate. If you are cutting down his portions he may not have to defecate as much. You can continue to cut his portions down. He is definitely overweight at 16 pounds. I don't know if your vet suggested this but I would recommend you add some fiber into his diet - it is best to do this by using a high fiber prescription cat food like Hill's w/d or r/d. I personally would put him on one of those diets as his own source of food and not just use it as an additive. These diets will also make him lose weight. And he will be able to eat more instead of you cutting his regular food down until he is eating almost nothing. I suggest you speak to your vet about this. You can continue the Laxatone.
