My cat has megacolon, can't poop, and won't eat. What should I do?

Megacolon can be very difficult to treat. I've had good results with Royal Canin's FIber Response diet so you could ask your vet about this prescription diet as an option for Bobi for long term management. It sounds like Bobi may be severely constipated now, and she may need to be hospitalized for IV fluids and multiple medications, or even manual deobstipation under anesthesia. There is also a surgery (subtotal colectomy) that can be performed that might help, so you could ask your vet about referral to a specialist.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Feeding high fibre food is the key in managing megacolon. Please, try Royal Canin Fibre Response - it is a very good diet that hopefully will be more tasty for Yzma than Hill's.

It's possible it will pass but sometimes it can't. I recommend to call your vet and get a time line for when Dexter needs to come back in if he does not pass the stool. These cats often benefit from fluid therapy. In severe cases this needs to be IV but as a maintenance therapy, it could be subcutaneous which you may be able to do at home. These cats often benefit from a high fiber diet and I recommend Royal Canin Fiber Response. Many cats do very well on this diet. I recommend to discuss this with your veterinarian. Hello.. I can suggest some possible remedies, but they may not work & his constipation will get much worse while you wait. Honestly, the best thing to do is to have Lucky seen as soon as possible. As he continues like this, he will get sicker. If he is eating, you can try 1/4 teaspoon in some wet food 2-3 times a day, but if he has stopped eating, there is no way for you to treat him at home. If she is not vomiting and is drinking water, you can try a dose or two of laxatone: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/tomlyn-laxatone-tuna-flavored-hairball-lubricant This helps with mild constipation, especially due to hairballs. You can also try ONE dose of miralax liquid (regular human strength. Give 1/4 tsp by mouth once. (If there are other things going on it could worsen dehydration so do NOT give more than one dose just in case). But the truth is, once Sapphire goes 24 hours without eating, it’s time to see the vet. At that point we have to consider something else like a fever, infection, injury, organ disease, toxin etc. Even if it is regular old constipation, an enema or stronger laxative may be needed. Do no under any circumstance try to give an enema to Sapphire at home. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Sapphire!

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Episodes of constipation are not uncommon in cats. Be sure you are feeding Rey a diet that is high in fiber. 3-5% fiber is recommended. You can also supplement with plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in her food daily. A little extra fiber goes a long way and will help pass her stool more easily. I would also recommend a fecal test be done at your veterinarian on Rey to rule out parasites as a potential cause of the constipation. I hope this helps and best wishes to you and Rey!

Poor Angel! This can be such a problem in older cats. You can add in some canned pumpkin (1 teaspoon a day) to help increase her fiber intake. Also, if you haven't already, I would talk to your vet about doing some abdominal x-rays. These will help the vet see how large the colon is and how much stool is present. Cats can get something called megacolon where the muscles in their colon don't work well and they get easily constipated. These cats usually need to be sedated and manually have some of the stool removed and then put on a drug called cisapride. Some cats will have to stay on this drug long term, but I have personally had good success with putting them on a food called Royal Canin GI Fiber Response and eventually getting them off cisapride and stool softeners. It is a prescription food so I would talk to your vet about it. Also, . Every cat is different and your vet will need to help guide you through this process. If your vet doesn't think she has megacolon then cisapride may not be needed but if she is REALLY backed up then she may still need to be sedated and have some feces removed to help her out.
