What's wrong if my cat won't eat, loses weight, and has cold symptoms?

Poor Bubba sounds ill! When a cat loses weight despite eating, it could be caused by a medical illness such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or kidney disease. The pale gums could be a sign of anemia. I would have Bubba seen by a vet first thing in the morning for a physical exam, blood tests, and a urinalysis. These tests can help diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and the vet can discuss treatment options with you.

He could have an underlying illness going on such as kidney disease that is causing his symptoms. The vet needs to do some bloodwork and a urinlaysis to start and try to find out what is causing him to be so ill. This is very serious. Cats often hide when they are ill. Bob needs to see a vet as soon as possible. You did not mention his age so it's difficult to give you an idea of what may be going on. If he is a young cat then he may have an intestinal obstruction. In an older cat the most likely causes for vomiting, hiding, weight loss and "bathroom" issues are: kidney disease, thyroid disease, diabetes and cancer. Regardless, he needs to see a vet. You can't let him go on suffering.

Based on your description and the pictures, I suspect that he has an upper respiratory infection. Many times upper respiratory infections can be contributed to the herpes virus in cats. I would recommend taking Catty in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Poor Garfield. At age 17 that is an awful lot going on and I'd be worried there is an underlying issue such as kidney or organ failure, disease, etc. Since he's so old and is having so many symptoms, it's best to bring him to your vet ASAP. They will likely want to run a few tests such as bloodwork or an X-ray to check his organ function, etc. If you can, bringing in urine or stool samples can also help with any testing and help streamline the process. Until you can get the vet, keeping him as comfortable as possible and keeping his eyes and nose clear with a clean washcloth can help. Some cats also do better eating if they can smell the food, so warming up his food or adding some boiled chicken that is smelly may encourage him to eat a little until you can be seen.

Young kittens such as Bubba can get bad colds and other serious infections. Upper respiratory infections are common and they usually have eye and nose discharge and can cause a fever so they don't want to eat. Kittens are also are more fragile than older animals so I recommend you get her to a veterinarian for treatment soon. In the mean time keep her warm and see if she will lick some water or tuna juice from your finger to help keep her from getting dehydrated. Usually with rest they will improve in a week or two.
