New mom cat not eating or using litter box 10 days after birth?

Your cat may be reluctant to leave her new kittens so you could try moving the litter box a little closer to her so she can use it, but still see her kittens. It may take her awhile to go since she has just gone through a major ordeal. If she hasn't used the litter box by tomorrow, or if she stops eating, I would recommend taking her (and her kittens) to the vet to be checked out. Good luck.

If she recently had kittens, her nipples may feel more plump than they typically would, since she may have residual milk in there that needs to resorb or they may still be swollen from being recently suckled on by her kittens. If she truly has not urinated in 24 hours, I would be concerned. I would check around your house for any spots, as she may have urinated outside of the litter box, since this is a new home for her. Stress can slow cat's GI tracts, so she may not defecate for a few days. As long as she is acting normally and has a good appetite and is drinking water, I would continue to monitor her at home. If she ever becomes excessively lethargic, or loses her appetite, or vomits or has diarrhea, I would have her evaluated by your veterinarian. You could try confining her to a smaller area for a day or so to make sure she is urinating. I hope this is helpful!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she is eating she will eventually urinate and poop. Be sure the litter box isn't too far from where she is with the kittens. Consider bringing it in the room where she is, but put it far enough away from her and the food. The loud stomach noises could just be gas moving through the intestines, they were cramped by growing kittens for 2 months. But watch closely for any vomiting or diarrhea from Lily. As long as she is eating and she used the litter box today I wouldn't worry right now. Good luck!

That is a very long time for a queen to be in labor, so she is likely very exhausted. keep her food and water near her and also her litter box. She should get up after a rest. She will also be very worried about her babies, and not want to leave them alone. Try not to handle the kittens as that may cause more stress to her. I would say by the evening she should get up for a little, to either drink or go to the litter box.

It could just be that she isn't quite sure what to do. Just make sure she has plenty of food and water and a litter box available, as well as a comfortable place to put the kittens. If she isn't eating, seems lethargic, or has a rectal temperature over 103 or under 100, then she should be evaluated by a veterinarian to see what could be going on.

Poor girl. If she is not eating food, then this is an indicator that she may have an infection. At this age, most of the kittens should be almost weaned off of her, so it is ok if she is not producing a lot of milk. You can start giving them kitten formula mixed with soft canned food at this point and help them wean completely off of mom. Poor Girl! Motherhood can be rough. Since it has been 3 days, I strongly recommend having your vet take a look at her. Since she is nursing, the kittens are depleting her of hydration and nutrients so waiting too long can make things worse. Having babies can mess up their blood values and cause issues. Your vet will likely run bloodwork. They will put her some meds that are safe for the nursing kittens if needed to help her feel better.
