My cat peeing after urinary blockage treatment, not eating. Vet visit?

Hi and thank you for submitting your question about Moustachio (neat name!). His lack of urination for 12 hours is concerning. If he really has gone 12 hours without any urination, you will need to take him back into your veterinarian's office. Male cats do tend to get mucous plugs or stones which can block the urethra and lead to difficulty or the inability to urinate. Not eating or drinking anything either in 12hours is also a concern that needs to be addressed today with the veterinarian who saw and treated Moustachio yesterday. I hope this has helped. If it has been more than a day without drinking or urination, or your cat seems in severe distress (vocalizing, painful abdomen, attempting to urinate but can't, etc), then this should be seen by your vet immediately as it may indicate another blockage that requires treatment.

If the clavamox didn't resolve the issue, I would bring him back in for additional exams such as neurologic examination, bloodwork, x-rays, etc to try and narrow down the cause. These can help rule out metabolic or infectious issues, injuries or joint problems, or neurological disease that could be causing his symptoms. If you weren't comfortable with your current vet, seeking out a second opinion in person or getting a referral to a specialist in your area may also be beneficial.

Hello, sorry to hear about Arki. This could be the case and it may take him a day or so to resume his appetite. However, if Arki is not able to urinate, has gone greater than 4-6 hours with urinating, is making frequent visits to the litter box and is unable to produce urine, or is sitting in the litter box and vocalizing then he should be evaluated immediately as these are signs he may be obstructed and would require emergency veterinary attention. If he is obstructed, then Arki is unlikely to want to eat anything as this is painful condition. If he is urinating, then as his UTI begins to clear, he will likely resume his normal appetite. When cats are blocked for a long time they can have elevated kidney and potassium values that with IV fluids and relieving the obstruction the elevations usually return to normal MOST of the time. Was blood work done when he was hospitalized? I would have him rechecked and blood work ran since it has been 2 days with out eating. Cats shouldn't go longer than that as they can get a secondary liver problem from not eating. If you changed his diet to a prescription urinary diet consider going back to his old food until he is eating and urinating well then trying the prescription food again. I would be worried that your cat is actually starting to experience the signs of a urinary blockage, and needs to have a urinary catheter placed in order to allow him to urinate normally until the inflammation and swelling associated with the urethra goes down. Please return to the vet where you took him; urinary blockage is life-threatening and medications alone frequently do not correct the problem.

Poor Kitty Kins. It sounds like he has either lower urinary tract disease, stones or has a partial urinary blockage. None of these conditions improve on their own, but instead require some level of treatment or management. So the treatment they gave him so far is basically they drained his bladder and treated him for an underlying urinary tract infection. However if he is developing a blockage he will need to be catheterized and treated with medications to help keep his urinary sphincter relaxed. You are doing the right thing by feeding him canned food, as this will increase his water intake and help promote a healthy bladder. However if he does become completely blocked (blocked Tom), he will need emergency procedures to free up the blockage and empty his bladder, as they mentioned already.
