My cat's nose is dry and hard. Is this normal if he's not sick?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 11.6 lbs

I gave a male Orange Tabby cat who always seems to a hard dry nose, instead of like the others who soft, wet noses. He does not act like he is sick or anything. I am curious, could this something wrong? Please let me know

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. This could be an indication of a systemic illness such as discoid lupus. This could also be a response to environmental change (dry air, warm temperature, etc.). If he is otherwise doing well, I would recommend trying a moisturizing balm such as BioBalm by Dermoscent, which can be found online quite easily. I would give this 1-2 months to see if it works. If there is no change, then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Logan so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jackson. I recommend monitoring if he is eating, drinking and playing. Make sure that he is not sneezing and does not have nasal discharge. If so, these are reasons to see his veterinarian. If the nose cracked and/or bleeding, then he needs to see his veterinarian as well. Otherwise a dry nose does not typically mean anything specific. This is a previous misconception that dry noses are unhealthy due to previously high incidences of Distemper. However, a dry nose is not of concern, and does not mean that Bruno is sick! As long as Bruno is acting normally - eating/drinking/urinating/defecating normally, I would not be concerned. I hope this is helpful!

Hi and thanks for posting! Common signs of an upper respiratory infection in cats may be sneezing, coughing, labored breathing or increased respiratory effort, nasal discharge, and ocular discharge. While having a dry nose may not necessarily mean anything significant, the nose being warmer than usual may indicate an elevated body temperature or fever. If Puma continues to have a very warm nose or is also experiencing other changes such as decreased appetite, lethargy, or is experiencing any of the above signs of an upper respiratory infection I indicated, you may want to take Puma into see his veterinarian for an exam and evaluation.

My cat has a sore on his nose that's getting worse, what's wrong?

Hello. I am always concerned about an ulcerated nasal planum in a relatively young cat. This could be bacterial, autoimmune, fungal, or cancer ( less likely due to his relatively young age ). You really need to see your veterinarian for a minimum of a culture & to start antibiotics. If the antibiotics do not seem to be helping, than a biopsy will be necessary. My cat's nose is always wet, but she seems healthy. Is this normal?

It's normal for a cat to have a wet nose! It can go from wet and cold to dry and warm just by laying in the sun or next to a heat source. The temperature and humidity in a room or the outdoors can influence a cat's nose to be wet or dry. Unless you are seeing excess discharge from Uli's nose, I would not worry about it :-)
