Why isn't my female cat experiencing her normal heat cycle?

I think in this case there are basically two possibilities: either she did not go into heat (that can happen anytime up to the 18th month or she went and she showed few signs. It is not common to observe vaginal bleeding from a cat in heat. The most notable signs of estrus in cats are behavioral. Most cats become very affectionate, even demanding; they persistently rub against their owners (or objects such as furniture), constantly wanting attention. They roll on the floor. When stroked along the back or spine, they raise their rear quarters into the air and tread with the back legs. They also become very vocal. These behavior changes often become annoying to owners, and sometimes owners think their cat has some unusual illness.

Some cats may have a delayed first heat cycle and still be normal, however if you are concerned, an exam with your vet or theriogenologist (animal reproductive specialist) can determine if there is any issue. Unfortunately, it's hard to know if this is pathological or if she is in heat? I recommend to look up information on heat cycles and watch videos. Also record the behavior on video. If this is not a heat cycle or if you are unsure if it is, I recommend to have her examined and have the doctor watch the video. The vet will palpate her spine and may check her urine for infection to look for a medical cause. Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is absolutely possible for animals to be hermaphrodites or "intersex", just like humans. This could lead to her being naturally sterile. There are blood tests that can tell if a cat has been spayed. Sometimes kittens are spayed when they are very young and better at healing their surgery scars. I would recommend getting this test done to find out because if she is not spayed and does have a uterus, it can cause health problems later in life. I hope this helps!

Some cats will have a silent heat but that is not really common. I would not be worried but if you are planning on breeding her then you should get her to a vet for a breeding soundness exam. They may want to do some testing to check her hormone levels or an abdominal ultrasound to "look" at her reproductive tract. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hello! Meribelle is just beautiful. Some cats take longer to go into heat than others, so it may be that she's a bit late. It could also be that she's had a silent heat. This is when a cat goes into heat, but does not display the usual signs of it. Given that you plan on getting her spayed, I would not be too concerned about it. I hope this helps!

It does sound and look like Eevee is in heat. Increased vocalization, ‘presenting’ her genitalia /arching her back, and often increased affection are typical signs of estrus/heat in cats which typically first starts after 6 months of age. Each heat cycle lasts around 5-6 days and unspayed cats typically come back into heat every 2-3 weeks. The ASPCA and many shelters offer low cost spay options such as mobile spay/neuter clinics that may be an option. If not, there is nothing that you need to do other than keep her away from intact male cats unless you want kittens in about 2 months’ time! Good luck!
