My kitten's new food lacks dried veggies. Do cats need vegetables?

It is quite alright if little Oliver does not eat dry food. Canned food has a higher protein and moisture content as well as less carbs than dry food. Cats do not "need" carbohydrates but do need a high protein diet, especially growing kittens. Feed a good quality canned food that comes from the can looking like a hockey puck. Read the ingredients and confirm there is named protein source of animal, not plant, origin. Avoid by-products and meat meals. Stay away from store or discount brands too, these typically contain low quality ingredients and more fillers.

Cats are obligate carnivores and they cannot eat a vegetarian diet. A vegetarian diet will cause heart disease and an early death for cats. Feeding Theo a commercial diet for cats is the best way to ensure he gets the appropriate amino acids to maintain the best health for his body. Home cooked meals almost always lack appropriate nutirients as well as inappropriate ratios. Giving him an egg is fine and is a source of high quality protein. As long as they are eating a high quality diet made for kittens they do not need any extra vitamin supplements despite how much or how little they eat. If you want to give a vitamin you can but it needs to be one made for cats.

Cats don't need dry food if you are providing wet cat food. The reason dry food is best is that most cats graze. You can leave the dry food out. Also, it helps with their teeth. Great question! No, it's not necessary to give Suzy wet cat food as well, the dry kitten food will provide her will all the nutrition she needs. You can give her some as a treat occasionally, and make sure she has plenty of fresh water to drink. I hope this helps!

You could certainly offer small amounts of potatoes, carrots, or green beans as a treat if you wish - but don't be surprised if Sam doesn't have much interest in these things. Absolutely! Dry food only diets are perfectly fine for kittens, provided that you are offering a diet formulated for growth, like a kitten or all life stage diet. Oliver can be transitioned to an adult cat food when he is 1 year old. Any time you change the food, be sure to do so gradually by mixing the old and new foods together for 5-7 days.
