Cat's nails are splitting and he's chewing them. Should I go to vet?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your kitty! The nail does appear malformed. I would recommend an examination by a veterinarian, as we can see this with nailbed infections at times. The vet can more closely examine this nail and the others and determine what the underlying cause may be and how best to treat the claw.

Hello. This could be a behavioral issue, or a behavioral issue plus paronychia ( skin infection around the nail/claws ). Even though you do not see anything unusual, a veterinarian can examine the skin, do a skin impression to see if there is a population of bacteria or yeast organisms present around the nail beds. An appropriate treatment can then be started. Often, this could also be an indication, & the only evidence of, an allergy. Allergies can come from the food or the environment & can be challenging to distinguish in cats with mild symptoms. So it is very helpful to get professional help with this. Sometimes the outter cuticles will shred due to injury, infection or a diet not high enough in fatty acids. I recommend to start Bruce on an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for cats and change his diet to Nutro or Royal Canin. Monitor the nail daily for any signs of reddness around the base of the nail, swelling of the toe, additional injury to the nail or excessive licking of the area. Poor baby. I would definitely go to the vet for that one. The groomer could pull it off, but there could be a lot of pain and bleeding. At the vet they can sedate him if needed, as well as send him home with a few days of pain medications or even antibiotics if he's been licking at it a lot.

It looks like your cat’s toenail has been sheared off, probably from an injury, fight or being hit by a car. My best recommendation is to take your car to the vet where they will be able to fully clean the area around the nail, trim the nails if necessary, and give your cat an antibiotic and pain medication if needed. Cuty’s foot looks very irritated and abnormal. I’d worry that she has an infection or a tumor that has caused her nails to fall off. I would recommend having a vet examine her foot right away. They might recommend an x-ray of her foot.
