My cat's nail is peeling. What signs mean I should see a vet?

It looks like your cat’s toenail has been sheared off, probably from an injury, fight or being hit by a car. My best recommendation is to take your car to the vet where they will be able to fully clean the area around the nail, trim the nails if necessary, and give your cat an antibiotic and pain medication if needed. Hello. This could be a behavioral issue, or a behavioral issue plus paronychia ( skin infection around the nail/claws ). Even though you do not see anything unusual, a veterinarian can examine the skin, do a skin impression to see if there is a population of bacteria or yeast organisms present around the nail beds. An appropriate treatment can then be started. Often, this could also be an indication, & the only evidence of, an allergy. Allergies can come from the food or the environment & can be challenging to distinguish in cats with mild symptoms. So it is very helpful to get professional help with this. Cuty’s foot looks very irritated and abnormal. I’d worry that she has an infection or a tumor that has caused her nails to fall off. I would recommend having a vet examine her foot right away. They might recommend an x-ray of her foot.

Some cats will get this around their nail bed. It's a buildup of skin cells, dust and dirt. If he will let you, you can clean the nail by soaking his foot in warm water and using a soft brush to remove the gunk. If the nail bed is reddened and inflamed, it's a good idea to get him seen by your vet as he may need antibiotics to help him clear it up.

Is it possible that Mickey got in a fight with something? I can't tell from the photo's if the nail is actually broken or not. They do have an outter cuticle that can shed but the nail is still fine and intact. Examine the 'quik' of the nail (that's the pinkish area at the base of the nail). If the break is through that area, if you see blood or redness around the base of the nail, have Mickey examined by the veterinarian. Clean off his paws as best he will let you. Check him all over for any bite wounds and have him examined if any area found. You may also just have him examined to be safe. Oh goodness, that looks like a deep infection. It could be bacterial or fungal, but I suspect more likely bacterial. He needs to see a veterinarian for an examination and treatment plan. What you are seeing on the nails may be individual sheaths. These are normal. A cat removes them and keeps nails sharp and trim by scratching. Provide a scratching mat or pole to help him. The spot on his chin could be a spot of chin acne which is common in cats. Keep the area clean and dry. You can use a pet wipe or a plain, unscented baby wipe. Sometimes a mild cleanser containing benzoyl peroxide can clear it up. If he has a plastic bowl, switch to a ceramic or stainless steel one. Plastic bowls may harbor bacteria or can cause an allergic reaction. If the spot doesn't heal or spreads, have him physically examined by your veterinarian.
