My cat on Methigel has an upset stomach and won't eat. What to do?

I would contact your vet about this. They may discuss changing his medications because sometimes the flagyl can cause a decreased appetite, or they may need to repeat the Cerenia if he is nauseous. Kisses to Ollie!

It's best to get the medicine in him, especially if it is an antibiotic. If there is something your cat cannot resist, such as cheese, or yogurt, try giving it to him after you give the medicine. That way he will come to associate getting the pill with getting a treat. Yogurt is especially good if your cat is getting an antibiotic as it helps reestablish the gut flora that antibiotics remove. Just make sure the yogurt you give does not have any artificial sweeteners. Plain or vanilla is best. Not eating is a serious matter in cats. They cannot go more than a few days without eating or they risk liver damage. Try enticing your pet to eat with beef or chicken baby food that does not contain onion or garlic power as an ingredient. Onion and garlic causes anemia in dogs and cats. Warm it in the microwave for a few seconds. Stir it with your finger first to make sure there are no hot spots and that it isn't too hot. This makes it more aromatic and appealing to your pet. Wetting dry food or mixing wet food with low sodium chicken broth, also warmed, might entice your pet to eat. Some cats like to be petted while they eat, some want to be left alone. You'll know your cat's habits and be able to act accordingly.

An upper respiratory infection often involves nasal discharge or swelling of the mucous membranes which can then disable the sense of smell and then cats do not want to eat. One way of helping that is to 1) remove any discharge from the nose as often as possible with a moist tissue. 2) feed her fishy canned food, preferably pate style, and warm it up in the microwave. This will intensify the aroma of the food. Clavamox tastes not so good, and sometimes it can also make a cat not hungry. However, it is absolutely necessary that your kitty eats at least a little bit every day in order not to get a serious liver disease. Try to hand feed her, if she will not eat from the bowl. If she does not eat at all she will need to be seen by your vet for a recheck.

You can try to entice his appetite with things like tuna, tuna water and chicken. Hello, sorry to hear about Arki. This could be the case and it may take him a day or so to resume his appetite. However, if Arki is not able to urinate, has gone greater than 4-6 hours with urinating, is making frequent visits to the litter box and is unable to produce urine, or is sitting in the litter box and vocalizing then he should be evaluated immediately as these are signs he may be obstructed and would require emergency veterinary attention. If he is obstructed, then Arki is unlikely to want to eat anything as this is painful condition. If he is urinating, then as his UTI begins to clear, he will likely resume his normal appetite. Hello, sorry to hear about Otto. He may not be eating because he does not feel well. He has an upper respiratory infection and likely feels very congested, he also now developed diarrhea and vomiting. So over all he likely feels very sick. He needs to continue his medications and be given time to get over his illness, unless his signs are getting worse. What you may talk to your veterinarian tomorrow about is starting Otto on an appetite stimulant to get him to start eating sooner. The sooner he eats, the better he will likely feel. Additionally, if he is not getting better you may need to consider other diagnostics including an abdominal ultrasound. Hope Otto feels better soon.

You can certainly try this, but if it doesn't entice him to eat I would start to wonder if he really has an upset stomach and he doesn't want to eat because he's truly nauseous. If he doesn't want to eat the mix of his old food and the new food tonight or in the morning I would consider scheduling a recheck for him to see if something else is wrong. Certainly the resolution of his urinary problems depends on his eating the s/o food, so he needs to get back on that as quickly as possible as well.
