Why is my cat meowing constantly? Is it normal or health-related?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Starting her heat cycle in a unspayed female cat is the most common reason for increased vocalization. Other possible causes are: she sees other cats outside (territorial), anxiety (cats outside, starting heat, changes to house hold), attention seeking, or medical issue. I would close the blinds temporarily, provide environmental enrichment (cat trees, interactive cat toys, lazer pointer, play with her) and consider spaying her. You can also consider a Vet exam to be sure it isn't a medical condition. If she is otherwise fine, I hope that is improves with time and some of the above. Have a great day!

Hi there. If he isn't neutered, this may be a big part of the problem - unneutered males are highly motivated to go out and search for females, so they are often restless and vocal in the house. They also tend to spray (urine mark) around the house, and their urine is extremely smelly. Because of this, I would recommend getting Kovu neutered to see if this resolves the problem.

Yes, this can be normal. Some kittens are simply more vocal than others. I would be concerned if he was only doing it when he was in the litter box, as that can be a sign of a medical problem, but if he's doing all the time, he likely wants love and attention :-)

Hi and thanks for posting! Vocalizing is very common and a normal behavior in female cats who are in heat and who are ready for mating. Vocalizing is thought to be a behavior used to attract a male to mate. She may continue to vocalize frequently until she comes out of heat or until she is bred. He may be meowing at you because he wants more attention. He may also be hungry or bored. Try playing with him, make sure he has food, and give him lots of love. I think you are saying that Toby is neutered. That is good because male cats can vocalize when they are trying to mark their territory. I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian for a good exam. It is important to rule out medical reasons for his vocalization like constipation, trouble urinating, pain, infection or oral disease. If he appears in good health I would be concerned about behavioral issues. Even though he is neutered he can still try to make or claim territory. You can try felioway around the areas. This is a cat pheromone that can help with stress.
