Why does my cat meow with an open mouth and wait for me to respond?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kopol. That is odd behavior for a cat to display. Is he tasting something bad during these episodes? A new food for example? If not, does he pant or breathe with his mouth open? This can be a sign of respiratory distress in a cat. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian for an examination. He could possibly be painful. Based on these results, blood work may be recommended as well. A thyroid disorder can cause a cat to meow more frequently. I hope this information helps!

If your cat is otherwise acting normal and eating fine I wouldn’t worry too much about this. As long as there is no underlying medical reason that could account for the sound then I imagine she may be bored and looking for attention. I would suggest getting a cat flap if you don't already have one so that she can come and go as she pleases. Cats love being outside and usually tire themselves out when out. Alternatively get her some climbing toys and you could try a pheromone diffuser.

If Yoshi was able to meow before and now can't, then yes I would be concerned as that can be a sign of a respiratory infection. If he's always been like this, then I wouldn't be concerned as some cats do have silent meows. Have Yoshi seen by a vet if this is a new behavior in him.

That is very cute! Some cats like the sound of their own voice, or she may be making the noise to get your attention to you to play with her and her favorite toy. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, using the litter box normally, and behaving normally, I would view this as a cute little quirk of hers and I would not worry about it :-)

Cats can sometimes "lose their voice" as a result of an upper respiratory infection, similar to what happens to people when we get laryngitis. As a result, they will sometimes go through the motions of meowing but little or no sound comes out. If this sounds like what you are seeing, I would recommend having her checked by a vet - she may need antibiotics or other medication if she has an infection. Another possibility based on what you are describing is that your cat is having trouble breathing - cats will sometimes appear to be panting, or breathing with an open mouth if they are having trouble getting their breath. If you see this, it is a medical emergency and the cat needs to be seen by a vet immediately.
