My cat lost appetite after Clavamox. What should I do right now?

It can take several days for an antibiotic to take effect against a bacterial infection, but not all upper respiratory infections are bacterial in origin. Many are actually viral which will have to run their course with supportive care. The drooling and foaming at the mouth can sometimes be seen shortly after administering oral medications such as Clavamox since they taste badly to cats. Matted fur could be caused by not feeling well enough to groom. Not eating is common in cats that can't smell well since they are smell-driven when eating. I would recommend that you try to give Sam water or pedialyte to stay hydrated, and try "smelly" cat food such as canned cat food or canned tuna. If he isn't better tomorrow, becomes profoundly lethargic, or you cannot get food or water into him, then he should be re-evaluated by your vet for other treatment options or even hospitalization.

An upper respiratory infection often involves nasal discharge or swelling of the mucous membranes which can then disable the sense of smell and then cats do not want to eat. One way of helping that is to 1) remove any discharge from the nose as often as possible with a moist tissue. 2) feed her fishy canned food, preferably pate style, and warm it up in the microwave. This will intensify the aroma of the food. Clavamox tastes not so good, and sometimes it can also make a cat not hungry. However, it is absolutely necessary that your kitty eats at least a little bit every day in order not to get a serious liver disease. Try to hand feed her, if she will not eat from the bowl. If she does not eat at all she will need to be seen by your vet for a recheck.

Clavamox, like most antibiotics, can cause upset stomach, nausea and vomiting when given on am empty stomach. The nausea and vomiting may be decreased if you give it with food. Some pets will do just fine taking antibiotics on an empty stomach.

Respiratory infections can be caused by bacteria as well as viruses, so if King has one caused by bacteria, yes it can help. I am concerned he's refusing to eat and if he refuses to eat today, take him back into the vet asap. I have some things you can do at home for him in case his respiratory infection is caused by a virus. First, you can try starting him on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight. If he's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. I would contact his veterinarian before discontinuing the medication. Be sure that Oliver has a meal before giving the medication as antibiotics can cause vomiting on an empty stomach. If he continues to have vomiting or diarrhea be sure to let his vet know and they may prescribe a different medication or something to give with the clavamox to help settle his stomach. You can get probiotics for cats at many pet stores, it may be worth starting him on this while he is on antibiotics. I hope Oliver is better soon. Hello. Thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. I am not familar with the antibiotic that you specifically have mentioned. However, in the US we do use something that sounds similar, called Clavamox. Either way, all antibiotics should be given with food if at all possible to avoid upset stomach. Many cats have a reduced appetite when they have a fever, so it is not surprising that Haro Kitaru is not eating on her own. I am very sorry that she is feeling ill and has a fever. If you are able to give her a small amount of chicken or turkey baby food before administering the antibiotic that would be best. This will reduce the chance of causing an upset stomach.
