Why is my cat still losing weight and fur after a normal vet exam?

Tori does look a little thin. It is very common for the physical exam to normal but there is no way the vet can tell what is going on inside with the function of the internal organs. So, if lab work was not done, I suggest that as the next step. Cats, as they age, typically get one of three diseases: 1. kidney disease, 2. hyperthyroidism and 3. diabetes. All of which can cause weight loss and all of which can be easily detected with simple blood testing.

Poor Sachi! Significant weight loss and inappetence are certainly a major concern. I'm glad to hear that his blood work (I assume a CBC, chemistry and T4?) was unremarkable. However, foreign body intestinal obstruction/blockages, intestinal malabsorption issues that can cause inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), chronic pancreatitis, or cancerous processes, do not necessarily cause changes on screening blood tests. If Sachi has not yet had abdominal x-rays or an ultrasound, consider talking to your vet about these tests as his next diagnostic step. If he has a foreign body obstructing his intestines, this is a surgical emergency, and these tests would be helpful in obtaining a diagnosis. If pancreatitis, IBD or EPI are more highly suspected, consider talking to your vet about testing for vitamins B12 and folate, as well as TLI and fPLI. I hope this helps!

In older cats with significant weight loss like this and normal blood work, the most common possible causes would be an intestinal absorption issue like inflammatory bowel disease (which can be present even if she is not having diarrhea), or some type of abdominal cancer. The next diagnostic steps would be abdominal x-rays and ultrasound, with exploratory surgery and intestinal biopsies if needed to get a definite diagnosis. If this isn't possible for financial reasons, a trial course of oral steroids and injectable vitamin B12 might be helpful - I would suggest discussing these options with your vet to see what he/she recommends.

I'm sorry that you're having this problem with Meliu! Weight loss, or difficulty gaining weight, can be caused by a number of different things. You didn't mention Meliu's age or whether she is having any other symptoms, so it's hard to make any specific guesses as to exactly what might be causing this. In general, some possibilities would include intestinal parasites, chronic pancreatitis or inflammatory bowel disease, a food allergy or intolerance to something in her diet, chronic liver or kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or even cancer. As you can see, it's a very long list! Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend taking Meliu to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to. He/she can do some diagnostic testing to help determine what is causing her weight loss, and get her started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.

That is odd. My first thought was that she's developed diabetes, but it sounds like you ruled that you already with lab work. If full blood tests have already been performed, an abdominal ultrasound would be the next step in trying to figure out what is going on. Given his weight loss, chronic diarrhea, normal blood work and initial response to depomedrol, chronic pancreatitis or primary intestinal issues, such as inflammatory bowel disease or lymphoma would be my main concerns. In this situation, further diagnostic testing is often needed to try to get to the bottom of this issue. Some tests include vitamin absorption and pancreatic blood tests (B12, folate, TLI, fPL) and an abdominal ultrasound to look at his internal organs, intestinal thickness, lymph nodes, etc. In some cases, biopsies are needed to differentiate between different conditions so that the most appropriate treatment can be started. Cats with inflammatory bowel disease or lymphoma often benefit from long-term steroids, antibiotics and prescription diets to control their clinical signs. I hope that all goes well for Schumacher!

I would talk to your vet about checking her thyroid hormones. It is probably unlikely but definitely possible that her thyroid is too high causing weight loss and hair loss. I would also make sure she is on a high quality dry and canned cat food to help increase the caloric intake. If you aren't planning on breeding her, I would consider getting her spayed as long as she is healthy enough per your vet. I would definitely continue the vitamins. Also, I would talk to your vet about ruling other things out if they haven't already like parasites, giardia, feline leukemia, feline aids, and more. I hope this helps!
