My cat's litter box smells terrible after new food. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 1 month old | 9.3 lbs

Hello! My cat had a gastrointestinal problem 9 months ago, our vet prescribed treatment + diet, I followed all the instructions and now my cat looks healthy and happy. The doctor recommended switching from ProPlan to super premium grain-free cat food, so I chose Monge B-Wild. After that nothing has changed, except the smell of his litterbox - it's so strong it's almost unbearable, ugh! It didn't use to be like this. Should I be worried or should we just try another brand of cat food? Thank you!

I would not be worried about the smell. I don't think it is harmful but understand it can be unpleasant for you!

I recommend you get her a probiotic and feed that along with the diet for a couple of weeks. I am not sure what brands of probiotics you have available there but you need to find one that is made for cats (not humans) and definitely do not give her any dairy (like yogurt).

If no change in the smell after trying the probiotics and it is really that unpleasant for you then I would suggest you change diets at that time.

Why does my cat lick her poop after using the litter box? Is it bad?

This behavior is most likely dietary related. I suggest you try a diet change to see if that will help. My other suggestion is to feed her a probiotic for the next few weeks. I like Fortiflora but any probiotic made for cats would suffice. DO NOT give human probiotics or dairy (like yogurt). If these two things do not help then you will need to take her for a vet exam and fecal test to check for internal parasites. I don't think she would necessarily get sick from doing this but of course it can make her sick. Especially if she has type of parasite she will just keep re-infecting herself. Hope this helps. Hello. Your kitty may be suffering from some type of food allergy. You can switch her to a sensitive stomach type of cat food ( Hill's Science Diet has a good one ), or you can talk to your vet about a Prescription Diet. I would also start using a good probiotic like Forti-Flora. You feed I little packet once a day for a month & see if things improve. Of course, if she is not feeling well, you must consider having her seen by your veterinarian to make sure there is not something seriously wrong with her digestive tract. Poop smell is dependent on the type of intestinal bacteria your kitty harbors. these are good bacteria, but some just smell awful. The same is true for bacteria in his anal glands. He may not be covering his poop enough, because he himself ma be disgusted with it, so only does a half-hearted job. If he is otherwise healthy then there is nothing to worry about. A bottle of Febreze may be your only weapon against the smell. Sometimes changing food, especially changing to wet (canned) food, pate-style, may change the intestinal flora and the smell changes too.

If not, then I would try another litter type to see if he likes it better. Another option is to try another diet that may work better for him. My cat is gassy but active. What food or probiotics should I try?

I would recommend a Rx hypoallergenic diet, because they are super easily digestible and reduce the amount of work the body has to put out to digest the food. Also a daily probiotic would be helpful to promote healthy intestinal flora. My cats' poop stinks up the house. Is it their current food?

It definitely can be the food. I would check a stool sample and see if they have intestinal parasites. If the stool sample from the litter box is positive I would just treat all 3 of your cats.
