My cat licks, bites, and pins new kitten. Is it dominance? Can I stop?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 17 days old | 8 lbs

Cheech, who has always been a very docile and kind of quirky cat, has been very weird about our new kitten. He'll follow the male kitten around, lick his butt, and clean him. But he'll also pin the kitten down and bite the back of his neck, and sometimes have his penis out. Is he trying to dominate the kitten or is it something else? Can I stop this behaviour? Cheech has only ever been around male cats- he's an inside only cat.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach. I would recommend giving them time to adjust to each other. This may be Cheech trying to establish dominance over the kitten. I would recommend gradually introducing them to each other over a period of 4 to 6 weeks. I would also recommend incorporating Feliway products to see if this helps. Feliway products can be found online quite easily or at your local pet store. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
