How to stop new cat from mounting and biting my older cat's neck?

It does usually take a few months for all the hormones to dissipate post neutering, however if the cat was neutered at a much older age, he may still have some of the behaviors/interest even without the ability. Keeping the cats separated if this behavior occurs, or even adding in a pheromone diffuser (such as Feliway) may help with inter-cat interactions.

Hi there! Behavioral issues in cats can definitely be frustrating. Obsessive mounting can often be attributed to underlying anxiety. I would recommend trying an anxiety reducing pheromone product called Feliway. It comes in diffusers, sprays, and collars and often helps multi-cat household behavior problems. If there is no improvement with Feliway, I would recommend talking to your vet about putting Max on a trial of anti-anxiety medication to see if that helps.

Hello. You do not say how old the kitten is, but this may just be the kitten learning how far he can push his older companion, or he is beginning to learn some dominance. Discourage the behavior by gently shooing the kitten away & distracting him with a treat or some play time with you. I have a cat that every time he sees my little dog sitting on my lap, he has to jump up & start chewing on the poor dog's ear. We then have to take turns to see who gets to sit in my lap. Such behavior can be a dominance issue and in older pets may be a sign of changing social dynamics and i would schedule a vet check to rule out any medical causes. The comfort zone diffusers for multicat household or the original feliway pheromone diffuser may help but i would not introduce a new kitten until things settle down

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Unfotunately, male cats are sexually mature as young as 6 months of age and typically act accordingly starting about then. I do not expect his “tomcat” behavior to stop until he is neutered or is geriatric (12+yrs). The behaviors could be especially bad any time there is an in-tact female anywhere nearby. Of course you can’t control that. Temporary distraction with toys, training, laser pointer, etc. may or may not work. Long story short, do yourself a favor and get him neutered sooner rather than later. Best wishes to you and Fuego!

I see that Benji isn't neutered. He could be exhibiting dominance behavior by biting the neck of the new kitten. It is normal that he is following him around, licking his behind, and sniffing where the kitten has sat. Given that you will have two males in the home, I would have Benji neutered as soon as possible. When two male cats live in the same home and are intact, that can lead to aggression and marking with urine around the house due to hormones. Having them both neutered before this behaviors starts will prevent this behavior from occurring.
