Why is my cat licking his red, inflamed paw? Is it infected?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | European Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old

Hey, I noticed my cat licking one of his fingers more than usual. I took a closer look and it looked red and a bit inflamed, kinda looks like its going in. I took some photos without opening it for a closer look because he doesn’t let me. But let me know if you need close up photos. He doesn’t seem in pain unless we try to treat it (with salt and water).

It does look like there is infection present. I would recommend having Dushka examined by a vet, he may need oral or injectable antibiotics. Until he sees the vet, you need to prevent licking. You can try socks or have him wear an e-collar.
