My cat licked his neuter wound open, what's the pink thing I see?

Oh Chandler, what a naughty kitty. They are so good at removing their cone! It looks like there is a little prolapsed tissue there likely from where he opened the incision. As long as he keeps his cone on overnight it will likely be okay to see you vet tomorrow. They can then make sure he doesn't need a suture and/or antibiotics. A check up would be needed to remove the stitch (which may be an internal one) and allow adequate healing. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/chewing. It looks like Mordred may have been pulling out her sutures. In 2 pictures there are 3 while in the third picture there are only two. I would recommend taking her back to the veterinarian to have them evaluate her and also recommend getting her an elizabethan collar. Typically after this procedure, it is best to keep them quiet for about 10 days but cats are hard to keep quiet so we do the best we can to help them recover. I hate to hear that this happened to Rusty. That looks like it is likely the subcutaneous tissue. Ideally that could be glued tonight with the sterile surgical glue. If you see anything coming through that looks like a tube, you need to be worried. I recommend to call the clinic and see if you can run him back in. Better to deal with things tonight rather than wait for the tissue to dry out- which still might be ok but not ideal. Best of luck with the little guy!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lilly! Is the wound right by his penis? If so that is a very hard location to bandage without covering his penis. The skin around the wound is very swollen and red. i am concerned about an abscess or a warble/cuterebra, which is a fly larvae under the skin. I recommend that you take him to the Vet Monday to have the area evaluated and to start antibiotics. Otherwise he needs an E-collar or cone to prevent licking. Good luck!

Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma (bite wound) and/or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. If you see your cat licking the surgical site, then he should wear an e-collar. It can be difficult to get one on cat that can prevent him from licking completely, so you may have to get a really large one.
