My cat leaks urine after PU surgery. How long will this problem last?

He is probably still suffering from an infection/inflammation and he probably received muscle relaxant medications which causes loss of control on the bladder. once the medication course is over and he is healed it will stop, but until then it's actually a good thing that he is peeing everywhere, it means he is not blocked anymore.

It isn't normal for a pet to leak this long post surgery, so there was likely a complication during the surgery. I would inform your vet about the symptoms and see if this can be resolved with medication (i.e. Prazosin) first and go from there. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Theo! These cats do well. Yes, the 2-3 weeks post surgery are rough but it is temporary. He shouldn't urinate differently. All cats squat to pee. There should be no outward difference. Just so you know, the surgery is to prevent a urinary obstruction. It will NOT prevent stress induced bladder inflammation where he will urinate small amounts, have bloody urine, urinate out of the box or whatever symptoms he shows. He may still have those type of flare ups and need to be on medications or a prescription diet for life. I would do the surgery. He will be fine. The short post-operative period shouldn't deter you. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian. He could have something mild like a urinary tract infection but he can also have stones or crystals in his urine that is causing discomfort. They can check a urine to see if it is an infection or if there are crystals and he may need an X-ray if they are suspecting stones. Yes, the infection and the spasms can continue for a few days after this is done. The important part is that he passing urine! But he needs to be monitored closely as he can still block again until the stream is good.

It sound like you have a great vet! Some cats are very hard to manage. You may discuss with your vet using steroids or placing a catheter for several days in a row and placing Georgie on IV fluids. Cerenia is an anti-nausea medication that can help with some types of inflammation. Adequan can also be used in cats with bladder issues, though it may take several weeks to be effective.
