My cat had one kitten, still contracting for hours. Is labor stalled?

My cat just delivered her first kitten at 7am an is still contracting and such but has yet to have another one and its 11am now. Should we be concerned?

While cats can have interrupted labor, it's concerning that Lucy is contracting and not having a kitten. In this case, yes I would be very concerned and I would take her and her kitten into a vet immediately for treatment.

Thank you for using PetCoach. Depending on how Boogle is acting determines how worried you should be. Typically cats will have their whole litter in less than 8 hours, so I am a little concerned by this timeline. If she had contractions after the first kitten was born and no more kittens then she may need intervention. If she is calm and relaxed, nursing and grooming the baby, eating and not actively laboring then she may just need a bit more time. My cat is in labor, can a kitten get stuck during delivery?

It is more rare for a cat to have a difficult time delivering kittens, however there is a possibility a kitten can become stuck. The whole litter is usually born within 6 hours with kittens every 30 to 60 minutes. If the cat is stressed or distracted she is able to stop her labor and restart the next day. However, if the female has been having strong contractions for greater than 60 minutes, she needs assistance in passing the kitten. Bring her and any kittens delivered to the vet’s office right away. My cat just had kittens, but another is stuck. When to call vet?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Lucy seems comfortable, is caring well for the kittens, & you do not see her pushing or having active contractions, then you can let her rest. You may be feeling a contracted uterine horn, or it may be another kitten, but if she is content then you can probably wait until the morning to have her checked out. Since it is already late, you would have to take her in to the emergency clinic anyway, but I would not recommend it, yet. If she becomes restless, vocal, & you see her pushjng for more than 30 minutes without producing a kitten, then take her in. Hopefully, this will not be necessary. Take care.

My cat is in labor for hours with only one kitten. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Birdie!! Cats can get very easily stressed when in labor and can delay the birth of subsequent kittens up to 24 hours. If she is actively contracting for greater than 2 hours without the birth of a kitten she needs to go to an emergency hospital. I would confine her to a quiet place with the kitten. Only one person should check on her every 1-2 hours. Keep the room dim and do not allow a lot of stress. I hope this helps and I wish Birdie the best!

My cat giving birth stopped contractions, kitten feet out. What to do?

She may be taking a break due to strain. By now she should have resumed contractions and have delivered her kitten. If she stopped altogether having contractions, you can very GENTLY try to pull the kitten on both feet. If it does not move, or seem stuck, you will need to take your cat and the kittens to a vet for him to develop that stuck kitten.

While cats can have interrupted labor, it is concerning that Snickers has already had two dead kittens and it's been 12 hours since she had the last one. She may be having trouble giving birth, and may need veterinary help to give birth to the third. I would take her into a vet immediately for care. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
