My cat is humping excessively after PU surgery. Is this normal?

Hello, & yes, this may be normal behavior for a young neutered cat. In most cases it is an appeasing behavior, or attention seeking. If when Duncan does this & it helps him settle, & he is doing no damage to himself, toys or the environment, then let him be. He may need more enrichment & toys to occupy him, using food toys are a good idea. Most cats quit within a few minutes. Do not punish him or take toys away as this may make the behavior worse. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sounds like Prince is still experiencing some signs associated with the male hormone testosterone. The testosterone levels drop after the neuter and should be decreasing now. Hopefully this behavior will ease up as the remaining testosterone gets out of his system. If things don't resolve or his signs worsen, I would advise that your veterinarian take a look at both of them to assess any problems. I hope this gets better soon.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Theo! These cats do well. Yes, the 2-3 weeks post surgery are rough but it is temporary. He shouldn't urinate differently. All cats squat to pee. There should be no outward difference. Just so you know, the surgery is to prevent a urinary obstruction. It will NOT prevent stress induced bladder inflammation where he will urinate small amounts, have bloody urine, urinate out of the box or whatever symptoms he shows. He may still have those type of flare ups and need to be on medications or a prescription diet for life. I would do the surgery. He will be fine. The short post-operative period shouldn't deter you. Hi and thanks for your request. A certain increased urination is to be expected after these procedures. If he is persistently licking the back end/genital area and he is urinating very frequently or you notice blood in the urine then a recheck up will be unfortunately needed.

The good news is he is passing urine well. When he was blocked the bladder got enlarged and now he doesn't have the bladder tone and control to hold the urine inside and urinate under control. This should improve with time. There is also medication that can help so please talk with your veterinarian about trying some medication. That does not seem normal. It’s possible that he has irritation in the bladder, prostate or the prepuce. Since he can’t talk and tell you if there is something uncomfortable, I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian. The doctor will likely check the prepuce, the bladder and also the prostate for any signs of abnormality or infection. If you can record the behavior, this would help as well to show the doctor. Yes, this can be normal. It could be Draco may have been doing this before, but you simply didn't notice, and now that you are paying closer attention to him due the fact he was neutered, you seeing this behavior. As long as everything else is normal, he's going to the litter box normally, this isn't an issue. It would be an issue if he was crying when he tried to pee, you saw blood in his urine, he was attempting to pee but could not, was going to the litter box multiple times in a short period of time, was peeing in small amounts frequently, and/or was very lethargic. If you see any of those signs, then it's an emergency and he would need to see a vet immediately. At this point in time, I do think what you are seeing is normal behavior, however. I hope this helps!
