My unspayed cat is in heat. How long does it last and how often?

Yes, it is possible that she is back in heat. Cats are induced ovulators and will often stay in heat until they are bred. I suggest you get her spayed as soon as possible. Unspayed cats over 6 months of age will generally have a heat cycle every 1-6 weeks (on average every 3 weeks). This does not indicate cystic ovaries and pyometra (an pus filled uterus) is generally more of a concern in unspayed dogs and not generally a concern in cats. Unwanted litters and overpopulation is often a concern however, so having Hermionine spayed is recommended if she is in contact with male cats that you do not want her to breed with. Good luck!

Increased vocalization, ‘presenting’ her genitalia /arching her back, and often increased affection are typical signs of estrus/heat in cats which typically first starts after 6 months of age. Yes, cats constantly go in heat if they are not bred. I recommend spaying her so this doesn’t happen. Constantly going in and out of heat can cause problems. She may develop breast cancer later in life from the constant hormonal swings. She can also get a uterine infection that is very serious and could become life threatening. 4 months of age is very young for a cat to be in heat but she certainly could be, especially since she is a Siamese. If you have any concern that there could be another reason for her behavior than have your vet take a look at her. If she is in heat than it will last on average about 7 days and she may go back into heat 1-3 weeks later. She is old enough to be spayed so talk to your vet about the best time to have her spayed. There really isn't much you can do to help her, just make sure she doesn't get outside or around any male cats.

Cats will tend to have a recurring heat cycle until they are bred, so if she isn't yet pregnant, she is likely to continue to have interest in the male, and the male in her. If you do not wish to have kittens, getting both your female spayed and your male neutered can prevent this, as well as reduce/stop the heat-related behaviors.
