Do cats need heartworm prevention & can I use dog nail clippers on them?

Hello. If your cat goes outdoors at all, or has problems with fleas, it is not wrong to be proactive in preventing intestinal parasites. We basically do this when we administer monthly heartworm preventative to cats ( & dogs ). So yes, it is OK to worm your cat, at least a couple of times a year with a broad spectrum wormer. Hi, this is Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can start introducing canned food now. But I'd trying mixing Kitten Milk Replacer in with it. I use a pair of human nail clippers to trim my adult cats nails, so that is fine!

Mosquitoes transmit heartworm, so if there's any chance that a mosquito can get inside and you are in a heartworm endemic area it would be a good idea. Heartworm disease is not as common in cats as it is in dogs, but there is no treatment for adult heartworms in cats and infection can be fatal.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I like Bravecto for flea and ticks. It is a topical that works for 3 months. Then I would use interceptor monthly for heartworm and intestinal parasites. Or you can use Advantage Multi and the Seresto collar for the ticks. But you are right there isn't a product that gets everything for dogs or cats. Have a great day!

You can start both of them anytime now. Before starting the heartworm treatment, we recommend having her tested for heartworm. This is important, because if she happened to acquire heartworm (spread by mosquitos), then the preventative medication can cause a bad reaction. Your vet can do the testing and prescribe a preventative. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It depends on how fast her nails grow and it she is scratching your furniture. I would recommend monthly for maintenance and every 2 weeks if she scratches your furniture. I hope this helps!
