Hi! Last weekend I noticed an open wound about the size of a dime on the underside of my cats tail. It was not bleeding and looked like a clean scrape. It seems to be healing now, but another spot came up during the week and more hair continues to fall off.

Your vet is right and apparently this was a seriously deep infected wound. Sometimes there is a so called "foreign body" in the wound, that cannot be found and the body will slowly get rid of it by making pus around it and that way moving it to the surface. I would have the vet recheck this wound, especially since it reopened. Apparently there is still some sort of irritant there that keeps it from healing properly.
