What is this dried blood scab on my cat and how do I treat it?

Its hard to say because of the hair, but this just looks like a scab from a previous injury. Just try to gently remove this with a gauze soaked in Betadine diluted 50:50 with water. If the scab comes off and the skin underneath appears to be almost healed, then there is no further treatment needed. If there are any signs of infection however which includes: discharge, an opening of the skin, muscle exposure, etc, then this needs to be treated by your vet with a course of antibiotics. However, it is very likely this is an old wound that is nearly healed already and the scab is just trying to fall off. You can clean the area with hydrogen peroxide. I would then take a hot wet washcloth and massage the area. The heat and massage will improve the blood supply to the area so it will heal more quickly. If there is a pocket of puss the goal is to get the scab off so the infection can drain. If there is an open wound then I would apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it afterwards. If she becomes lethargic and not eating then I would bring her in for an exam as she may have a fever and need antibiotics. This looks like an infected scratch or bite. I would clean it with hydrogen peroxide twice daily and you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. This should improve daily and should be healed in a week or so. If this isn’t healing then please have it examined. He may need oral antibiotics to fight the infection. Skin wounds on cats heal quickly as long as they stay open to the air so no infection builds up under the skin. It looks like she make have gotten a small wound on her head, maybe from getting swatted by another cat. Cat claws and bites tend to make wounds with small holes that seal over and trap bacteria inside. This will form a small abscess which will then rupture, which is what this appears to be to me. Keep an eye on it and keep it clean with a washcloth, warm water and a mild soap. Clean it two or three times a day and make sure to get all the soap off or it will irritate her skin. As long as it continues to improve and she is acting fine, eating and drinking, she should be fine. If it closes up again, swells, gets really red, hot, or if she starts acting sick or loses her appetite, get her in to see you vet as soon as possible as she may then need antibiotics to clear up the infection and heal.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It appears Precious may have sustained an abscess, probably from a fight with another cat. The abscess ruptured, & Precious has been licking the area to keep it clean. Her sandpaper tongue can actually cause more trauma to the area. You can clean the area with a little warm water & a disinfectant such as Betadine, & you may need to put an elizabethean collar on her to stop the licking. These type wounds do not always need antibiotics, but it would not be a bad idea to let your vet have a look at it just to make sure . Hope she well very soon.
