Why is my cat losing hair on his inner hind legs after hip surgery?

What you describe certainly is not normal after a minor surgery such as a neuter. However, I am suspicious that he may have a skin infection, ringworm, or even possibly mites. Sometimes if they have a minor infection or mites then the stress of surgery can cause it to get worse. I am sorry to hear that Kitty is expecriening these issues. If these hanged in behaviour are new and happened with the changes in coat quality, It may be a good idea to have Kitty checked out by your vet for a condition called hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is common in cats. It can affect behaviour, coat quality, can cause increase in urination, drinking and appetite. Your vet will be able to rule out this disease with a simple blood test and it can be treated in a number of ways including tablets, radioiodine therapy, special prescription diet or surgery. Orthopedic issues and dermatologic issue are not usually known for their close correlation. However, when they are related, it is usually because an orthopedic issue is causing pain or discomfort, and the licking makes the area in question feel less painful. Licking can certainly result in hair loss though you did not mention any licking in your post. If there has not been any licking, then I have serious doubts that the two issues are interconnected. As for whether or not they are a cause for concern, I am definitely not very worried about this small area of hair loss. It could just be an anomaly present in your cat for unknown reasons or a result of how his legs are bent in an odd fashion. In terms of the orthopedic issue, most pet owners are concerned with them when they cause pain or discomfort. In this case, there does not seem to be either. He has functioned this way fine for the last couple years and based on your post is not slowing down. Can I predict whether or not his malformed gait might cause early onset arthritis? No. But, ultimately you probably won't be able to have this condition repaired anyway. You can certainly consult with a surgeon about this if you would consider it however. There are a number of reasons that a cat will overgroom themselves, but one of the most common reasons that we will see a cat overgroom the inside or back of the thighs is a flea allergy. If a cat has a flea allergy, it only takes 1 flea bite a week to keep them itchy and cats are such good groomers that you will often never see fleas. So, it is always recommended to have all animals in the house on a monthly flea preventative if any animal in the house has allergies or skin problems. If not, then you can discuss using anti-itching medications such as anti-histamines or steroids short term to resolve the itching and licking. There can be several reasons for hair loss in cats, such as Infections (fungal or bacterial), overgrooming, allergies, or an underlying medical condition. I would recommend taking Mickey to his regular veterinarian to have it evaluated and started on any treatment if warranted.

This bald patch on Moo Moo could be caused by trauma, or her pulling the hair out of that area due to itchiness. Itching in cats could be due to fleas, mites, allergies, or ringworm. I would keep an eye on the spot for now. If the hair doesn't grow back, or the spot gets bigger, then I would take Moo Moo into the vet for an exam to rule to one of the causes of itchiness I mentioned above.

Jimmy may have a bacterial or parasitic infection causing hair loss, or allergic skin disease, or some kind of hormone imbalance causing the hair loss. He needs a full workup by a vet to include bloodwork and and skin scraping to look for mites/parasites, and to get him on the right medication to make him feel his best and grow the hair back.
