My cat's eyes are bald after vacation. Is it stress or something else?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is a variety of reasons that can explain alopecia or hair loss. The causes can easily be differentiated by the clinical signs associated with it and the physical exam findings. If he is only showing some hair loss without scratching or overgrooming then it could conditions such as alopecia areata that can affect cats and usually resolves on its own. If there is evidence of scratching and you start noticing some redness or irritation associated with it, then other conditions such as allergies are possible. If you notice himovergrooming himself in that area then it could be something like psychogenic alopecia which is more of a behavioral issue. I think that since he is not having overt clinical signs and it is mostly hair loss, I think it is possibly transient and could resolve on its own. You can monitor this closely and if it does not resolve or it worsens then have him examined by your veterinarian. Good luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. She may be experiencing an allergic reaction to something in your new place or she may be developing an eye infection. She should see her veterinarian tomorrow to have her eyes addressed. You can ask about her hair loss as well. Stress can cause an increase in shedding which could have been brought on by your move. Allergies, mites or ringworm can all cause hairloss as well. I hope this information helps!

I am sorry to hear about your kitty! The hair loss around the eyelids we see here is not a normal hair loss. I would be concerned about possible allergies, ectoparasites such as mites, or bacterial infection. I would recommend bringing Cairo in for an examination by the vet. They can test for parasites and determine the appropriate treatment for him based on examination. This may include topical medications, oral medications or injections depending on what they find on his physical examination and history.

However, if it is not associated with itchiness, redness, discharge or a mass effect, I would continue to monitor him unless you notice any other symptoms like the ones described above. If he's acting okay otherwise, keep an eye on it, as long as he hasn't been exposed to any other animals that may have passed along something like ringworm recently. If so, get him checked as soon as possible since ringworm can be passed on to people and other animals. If he's very sensitive, it could be stress, especially if he's shown symptoms of stress related overgrooming in the past. Silicone isn't something I've had experience with a cat having a sensitivity to, but that doesn't mean it's not possible. If he has had reactions to plastic bowls then it's definitely possible. If it gets worse or spreads, get him in to see your vet as soon as possible.

I am sorry to hear about Onyx. I would wonder with the change in location if this could be allergy related. We can sometimes see irritation/inflammation around the eyes due to allergies. We can also see this with some mites, bacterial or viral infections, or autoimmune diseases. I would recommend an examination by a veterinarian to try to pinpoint the underlying cause. Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about George's troubles. It may be a simple skin infection around the eye, but something else that is always on the diagnosis list for cats is, ringworm. Ringworm is a fungus that can be transferred to people. Therefore, I would bring George in to see his veterinarian, so that he can be tested for that. Other possibilities for lesions like the one George has include, bacterial infections, infections with skin parasites, and even allergies.
