Why is my 5-month-old cat suddenly losing fur around his eyelids?

I am sorry to hear about Onyx. I would wonder with the change in location if this could be allergy related. We can sometimes see irritation/inflammation around the eyes due to allergies. We can also see this with some mites, bacterial or viral infections, or autoimmune diseases. I would recommend an examination by a veterinarian to try to pinpoint the underlying cause. They can then prescribe either oral or topical medications depending on what they determine the cause of the hair loss to be. Best of luck to you and Onyx!

There are a multiple things that can cause hairloss in cats including bacterial infections, fungal infections (ringworm), allergies, mites, and fleas. She should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treatment. Your vet may need to do some diagnostic tests to diagnose the problem.

Hair loss in a young kitten is most often due to parasites including fleas, mites and lice. If Maple is not already on a topical flea preventative, I would recommend getting one immediately. Keep in mind that fleas will remain in the environment so you will need to clean/disinfect Maple's bedding as well as any furniture she lies on, blankets etc. If this does not improve the situation, I recommend you take Maple to the veterinarian to check for mites, fungal infections or diseases including allergies.

The causes can easily be differentiated by the clinical signs associated with it and the physical exam findings. If he is only showing some hair loss without scratching or overgrooming then it could conditions such as alopecia areata that can affect cats and usually resolves on its own. If there is evidence of scratching and you start noticing some redness or irritation associated with it, then other conditions such as allergies are possible. If you notice himovergrooming himself in that area then it could be something like psychogenic alopecia which is more of a behavioral issue. I think that since he is not having overt clinical signs and it is mostly hair loss, I think it is possibly transient and could resolve on its own. You can monitor this closely and if it does not resolve or it worsens then have him examined by your veterinarian. Good luck!

However, if it is not associated with itchiness, redness, discharge or a mass effect, I would continue to monitor him unless you notice any other symptoms like the ones described above. This could be from rubbing her eyes (allergies or irritation maybe?) or if she accidentally rubbed too hard against something. If you notice hair loss in other places too, or if you develope a red area or rash, we should add ringworm to the list of possibilities. I would say, watch for a few days. Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. She may be experiencing an allergic reaction to something in your new place or she may be developing an eye infection. She should see her veterinarian tomorrow to have her eyes addressed. You can ask about her hair loss as well. Stress can cause an increase in shedding which could have been brought on by your move. Allergies, mites or ringworm can all cause hairloss as well. I hope this information helps!
