My cat's eye is red and losing hair around it. What's the cause?

Sounds like George is very itchy. Common causes of itching in cats includes fleas, mites, ringworm, bacterial infection, allergies, among others. If George isn't already on a flea preventative, you should get that started. Ear mites are also incredibly itchy. You can try an OTC ear mite medication, but the best bet would be to have him examined by the vet. The vet may need to collect a sample for examination under the microscope to make a diagnosis. I am sorry to hear about your kitty! The two most common causes for lesions/irritation in this region would be an ear issue (the cat is traumatizing the skin while trying to get to the ear) such as infection, mites, or foreign body within the ear; or allergies (we can have allergies to foods or environmental allergies like pollen, dust). I would recommend bringing your kitty into the vet so they can look down into the ears with an otoscope to check for abnormalities. Dependingon their findings they can prescribe medication to help treat this issue.

Whenever you hear about a raised red patch on a cat you have to be concerned about either an ringworm infection (rough surfaces) or a condition called eosinophilic plaques (immune mediated disorder that is usually smooth surfaced). To figure out which is most likely the cause it would help to actually see a photo of the area in question. If it is still unclear then some testing of the skin may be needed. Your local vet can do a skin impression smear and/or fungal culture to diagnose ringworm, while eosinophilic plaques can be confirmed with a skin biopsy. Hi and thank you for your post.! It is hard to see and make out the detailing the pictures- there is a flash there. However, hair loss around an eye in cats may be suspicious to fungal infection (ringworm) which typically occurs around the face. A veterinarian can diagnosis this with a fungal culture. Poor Bandit. IF bandit is an indoor/outdoor cat I would be concerned about parasites, allergies or even infection. If bandit is an indoor cat I think parasites and allergies are still likely causing the hair loss. I would recommend taking Bandit to a vet to make sure the hair loss is not secondary to a skin parasites and get better direction on proper treatment. I hope that helps
