Why is my cat's grey fur turning brown? Is it linked to soft stool?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 1 year and 5 months old | 5 lbs

Hello! My cat has had ongoing problems with soft stool (I've been in and out of the vet's office for the past while). I've tried endosorb, probiotics and other medicine. He seems to be improving but I've noticed that his grey coat has started turning tawny brown. He's indoor so it's not likely sun exposure. Could it be something to do with his stomach problems or is it likely nothing to worry about? Thanks a bunch! - Laura Also.. oddly his head has stayed grey and his body is brown. Grooming?

Hi Laura! The changes in Jasper's coat color could be due to a variety of causes, including endocrine/metabolic diseases (hyperthyroidism is one example), cancer, nutritional deficiencies, or steroid administration (prednisolone is one example). I realized that I mentioned both cancer and hyperthyroidism as possible causes of coat discoloration, but these are highly unlikely given Jasper's young age.

If Jasper's diet has changed considerably or if he has received steroids as a part of his soft stool management, it is possible that these changes could be related. Make sure that Jasper is eating an appropriately balanced diet, such as a commercially prepared cat food. Many home cooked diets lack an appropriate vitamin and mineral balance, and these deficiencies can cause coat discoloration. Also, speak with Jasper's vet to determine if he is currently receiving a course of steroids or has taken steroids recently. If he is comfortable and not itchy, the coat changes may not be a cause for concern, but it is still worth mentioning to your vet.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Zuko is such a handsome kitty! Occasionally focal areas of skin can get darker after it has healed after a period of inflammation. This can cause a concurrent change in the hair colour. In this location under the neck, a common cause of inflammation is chin acne, for example. If the fur and skin is otherwise looking healthy in this area, I would recommend to monitor it. If there is any concurrent scaling, redness, or itchiness, I would take Zuko to the vet within the next few days to rule out ongoing infection, or allergies, etc. I hope this helps!

My senior cat has yellow mushy stool. Should I change her diet?

The first and most common reason for it could dietary related. Other differentials may be parasite infestation and infective or inflammatory gastrointestinal disease. I would strongly recommend to start changing the diet (switch gradually over one week time), giving a bland one based on boiled chicken or white fish and rice/potatoes for a couple of weeks. If by then you will not notice any improvement,a check up and more investigations and/or treatment (antibiotic trial and parasite treatment) would be ideal. Why is my cat's poop orange and loose after a recent food change?

I am sorry to hear about Felix's stool problems! We can see loose stools or color changes in stool as a result of a change in food (even if you are feeding the same brand, a different flavor may have different ingredients or coloring agents). If Felix's energy level is normal and he has no vomiting, then you can try switching him back to his original food and seeing if his stools return to normal after a few days,or you can try picking up a probiotic at the pet store and see if this improves the stools. If these do not work, a trip to the vet is recommended (or if he starts vomiting/stops eating/is lethargic). In the future, if you want to switch foods it is recommended to do so gradually, slowly mixing the new food in with the old food.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jasper. I agree with the concerns for a thyroid disorder. I do recommend that he sees a veterinarian. Blood work and urine testing will likely be needed to reach a diagnosis. Hyperthyroidism and diabetes can both cause an increased appetite with weight loss. Unfortunately, there is not a good recommendation for at home care. I hope this information helps!

Why is my cat limping, can't jump, and has black tarry stool?

I recommend bringing Jasper to a veterinarian and bring a stool sample. If there is truly black stool that can indicate bleeding into the intestinal tract but it may just be very dark. Regarding his limping I would want your veterinarian to make sure he didn't break anything, make sure there is no small abscess and to treat accordingly.
