My cat grass has mushrooms. Should I remove them for my cat's safety?

These mushrooms look like "Lawyer's Wig", or shaggy ink cap mushrooms. They are edible when young. However there are poisonous lookalike mushrooms. I would not let my dog eat them as it is not proven that they are not poisonous to dogs. Watch for diarrhea, vomiting, general malaise and if you see those signs, take your dog to your veterinarian for an exam.

This plant will cause mild to severe GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite), the toxicity is considered mild. if Knight is experiencing severe vomiting and lethargy you should take her to the vet to get treated.

Mushroom identification can be tricky even for experienced mushroom hunters. Your best bet would be to contact your local Extension Office and submit a sample for identification. Most species are non toxic, causing nothing worse than some stomach upset, but some species can be deadly. It would be safest to keep your pets away from them until you can positively identify them.

I don't see this plant listed as a toxic plant on the Aspca website, so it should be safe. Typically grasses are safe, it's flowers that are most concerning. The chia pet plant is not toxic to cats so if Cid were to ingest / chew on the plant, he should be fine. It would probably be best to not allow Cid to chew / eat the plant to prevent any GI upset. If it is causing discomfort it needs to be removed, there is a risk if it is rubbing the skin that it will cause an infected wound. Given it is on the face, sedation may be the best option in order to remove it safely (for both cat and handler) and you should contact your vets office if it does not comb out easily. Take care as cats in pain can be very unpredicatble and deep bites and scratches which can cause infections in people are possible if trying to work around his head in particular

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am concerned that because he vomited so many times and had diarrhea, he could be very dehydrated. Also, mushrooms can result in liver toxicity in dogs that tends to be significant. Even if he vomited some of it, there is still likely some left in his system. I think it would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check some basic lab work to check for signs of liver toxicity and treat accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!
