Can my cat eat a chia pet? Is it safe or toxic for them to ingest?

Cats do not have the digestive enzymes to break down raw plant matter, so even if they eat cat friendly plants, they will likely vomit otherwise. There are some bean plants that are toxic to cats, such as the castor bean plant, but given the liklihood DoReMi will vomit after eating cat safe plants, I wouldn't put out any for him eat and play with in the house.

I don't see this plant listed as a toxic plant on the Aspca website, so it should be safe. Typically grasses are safe, it's flowers that are most concerning. Corn plants contain saponins which are toxic to cats. Signs of toxicity include vomiting ( occasionally with blood), anorexia, depression, hypersalivation, & dilated pupils. If your cat shows any signs of these in the next several hours, than please call your vet immediately. In the meantime, please remove this plant from your home. Many young cats like to chew on plant material like grass and leaves, so this may be why corn husks appeal to him. They are not toxic to cats, but if he eats large amounts I would be concerned about causing a possible intestinal obstruction since they are not easily digestible. I would recommend looking for a safer outlet for Spock's chewing and eating behavior - you could try getting him some cat grass to grow inside (available at many pet stores) or even providing a rawhide strip or dental chew similar to what is used for dogs as some cats enjoy these items also.

Signs of depression in a cat include lack of grooming, lethargy, changes in personality, aggression, increased periods of sleeping, and hiding. If you are seeing any of these signs in Bruce, you need to take him into a vet immediately. Should he not be showing any of these signs eight hours after chewing on the plant, then you may be lucky and he should be ok. I would remove the jade plant from your home to prevent him from chewing on it again. Keep an eye on him for the next 24-48 hours, and if they pass without any symptoms of toxicity, then he should be fine.

At worst, you may see some oral irritation, drooling or stomach upset. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals which are very irritating. If you've seen no symptoms, they are likely not affected. If it happens again, rinse the mouth with cool water for 10-15 minutes and offer a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until any symptoms resolve.
