My timid cat has grass stuck near his eye. Can I safely remove it?

Oh dear! Poor kitty. I would be concerned that it may not be safe to attempt to remove this on your own, especially since your cat is a bit feisty ;) Depending on how deeply it is stuck, it may be painful for your cat to try and remove it, and you could easily be bitten badly in the process. I would really recommend taking him to the vet and allowing them to remove it instead - the veterinary clinic has trained staff who can safely restrain him without being injured, or they can sedate him if needed to get a better look at what is going on and remove the head without causing pain or additional damage in the process.

You can try to get it out with tweezers. Then I’d clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide and apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. If you can’t get it out I would uses a hot compress on the area two or three times a day to increase the blood supply and hopefully that may help loosen it in the skin. HI, thanks for using PetCoach! Most cats and dogs that get thick mucous or a hair stuck on their eye are just fine. They eventually are able to blink enough to get the hair off the eye. These animals do not even notice it meaning the eye is open and not red. If Oliver is keeping his eye closed and seems painful then he needs to see a Vet. It could be something stuck irritating the eye or he could have a scratch on his eye, uveitis or glaucoma. If a blade of grass is still stuck way in her nose doing a nasal flush or using a scope may be needed to remove it. Hopefully she is just sneezing now from irritation from the blades you already removed. Good luck!

That’s a hair or fiber on Felix’s cornea. If you have eye drops at home or can pick up artificial tears or visine at your local drug store, you can flush it off of his eye that way. Avoid touching his eye with your fingers to avoid damaging his cornea. You might be able to push it down to the lower eyelid edge of his eye where you can pull it away by very gently closing his eyelids. Good luck!

I would have your cat seen by a vet and not try to get this thing out yourself anymore. You could accidentally do real damage to the eye by doing this. I would find an ER vet or a vet on call to see him today if your regular vet is closed. This is because any eye problem is considered an emergency. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. While I can see the lesion you're referring to in the pictures it's difficult to tell where it originates from. It could be a growth coming from the iris or foreign material stuck in the eye. I would recommend catching him for your vet to take a look - it is possible that it's something that could affect his vision. If it's really difficult to take him to the vet you could see if there are any mobile veterinarians in your area that could come to the house, but you would still need to confine him somewhere inside (without many areas to hide) for the visit.
