Can my pets get giardia from a stray's blanket? What symptoms?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | 7 lbs

I took in a stray cat who I have had sequestered in a room away from my other three cats and one dog. The only contact was indirect from a blanket that stray cat layed on for an hour, and then my other cat sniffed and layed on. After neuter and fecal test, Vet says stray has giradia. Can other cats get giradia by sniffing and laying on the same blanket. What should I watch for in other cats and dog?

No giardia is not that easily spread. Your dogs and cats have natural immunity to parasites as they are healthy. The stray was probably not as healthy and was exposed to giardia in dirty water she had been drinking. If you see mucus in the stool or are worried I would wait a few weeks and then get a fecal test done to rule out giardia. I'm not overly concerned about them getting it and see no reason to worry unless you see changes in the stool.
