Can my pets get giardia from a stray's blanket? What symptoms?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Your dog can get it if your dog eats her stool or drinks water contaminated by the puppies stool. So your dog should be walked in a separate area from the puppy. As long as you prevent that you should be fine. Though it might be best to not bring your dog until the puppy has a confirmed negative stool. People can also get giardia so be careful. Good luck!

I am sorry to hear that everyone has been so sick! The one parasite that can transfer between species that produces symptoms you describe is something called giardia. You may consider asking your physician to test you for it. Other possibilities include salmonella, Cryptosporidium, and campylobacter. When testing my patients for these more rare diseases I use a test through idexx called a GI fast panel PCR. You may Consider asking your veterinarian to run this test. Using proper hygiene when handling pets is important as well as making sure they are not eating any forms of raw diet that can transmit disease. Best of luck and I hope you improve soon. To make sure 100% that Giardia is gone, ideally a fecal test should be performed. If clinical signs are resolved though, Giardia can be considered clinically resolved and Bebe can get in touch with the other animals. Hello. Unless you somehow got Noni's face underwater, there is no way bathing her caused the pneumonia. My thoughts are that her immune system has been compromised, possibly from some underlying condition. How else could she become symptomatic for Giardia while being housed strictly indoors. My thoughts are that she has always harbored this parasite ( which is not unusual ), & something triggered the Giardia to become significant. I am glad that the Panacur worked for her, but her pneumonia may be a result of something that has compromised her immune system. I would recommend chest x-rays, blood work to include testing for Feline Leukemia & Feline Immunodeficiency Disease as well as looking at her thyroid levels. I am sorry Jax is not feeling well. Giardia can be spread and is contagious between dogs. If you had a dog at home diagnosed with giardia it is very possible the other dogs have it too. However I would recommend taking them to the vet for confirmation to make sure you are not overlooking another possibilities. Hope that helps

Yes, they can have Giardia or coccidia without any signs of disease and it can be missed by the lab depending on the test. There are a few different possibilities with what you are describing though. It could be a parasitic infection, but could also be a bacterial infection, or colitis due to an adverse food reaction. Considering you are seeing blood, it's best to have your vet recheck her.
