Is my cat's fur loss from ringworm ointment normal or concerning?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 months and 25 days old

I’ve been giving my cat ointment for her ringworm. When I started, her fur was only thinning in the effected area. Now she has no fur there. Is this a negative reaction to the ointment or just a side effect that shows it’s working? Before and after picture attached

While it may clear up in a week or so, it’s not uncommon to be a bit of a longer battle for some, and sometimes difficult to clear. I would recommend that you take her back to the vet to have them re-evaluate. Medicated baths and/or oral medication may be helpful.

Hair loss is normal and expected with ringworm. Keep using the ointment until the hair starts to grow back, which may take several weeks or even months. You may want to talk to your vet about using an oral antifungal in addition to the ointment.

Poor cat. White patches with hair loss sounds like a possible Ringworm infection. Topical Lamisil won't work if this is truly a Ringworm infection that is spreading. Instead you need to get her a fungal pill that she needs to take for 3-4 weeks. Therefore, Mano needs to see your local vet for an exam, fungal culture to verify Ringworm, and then a prescription for anti-fungal (i.e. fluconazole, terbinafine) medication. I hope your girl gets well soon!

My pet has ringworm. Will fur loss continue or spread with treatment?

If you are giving oral medication as well then hopefully hair will stop Falling out soon. However, it can take a few weeks to really slow ringworm down, and then a few more weeks to really get rid of it. My kitten has a fungal infection and is losing fur. How long to heal?

This can take several weeks to months as the skin and coat need to heal after the fungal infection is resolved. We cannot prescribe medication but you can bathe her in a cat labeled iodine or fungal shampoo twice weekly. Cats are very sensitive to medication so do not use anything on your kitten unless it is specifically labeled as safe for kittens. Check at you pet store and they should be able to help you find a safe shampoo for Misty. I recommend cleaning the bedding also and washing your hands after playing with Misty. Usually as the kitten grows up they have better immunity and they will start to heal the skin on their own too. If after bathing the fungal infection isn't improved then take her to your local veterinarian for treatment. Why does my cat's ringworm still glow under UV after treatment?

If the area is still glowing even if you have treated for 2 weeks, I still recommend continuing treatment and would state that Chloe does in fact still have ringworm. I have seen some animals needing treatment for 4-6 weeks with oral medication and topical. Sometimes scabs and dandruff can glow under the light and it can appear that the area is glowing when in fact it is just the scabbing or dandruff. If it is truly the skin lesion then I typically have clients treat for another 2 weeks and recheck again. Pet ringworm: Are Malaseb and Phytoral working? How long to heal?

Yes, the medications you are using are appropriate. Ringworm can take months to resolve so just keep on with the treatment. Be sure when bathing with Malaseb you leave the shampoo on her coat for at least 5 minutes before rinsing. The shampoo needs contact time with the skin in order for it to work. Hope this helps. Kitten has bald spots above eye after URI meds, is it ringworm?

This looks like a ringworm infection. Kittens do get ringworm especially if they have been sick. You should take her to your veterinarian for a diagnosis and treatment. This isn’t an emergency though so you can wait until next week. This can spread to people so please wash your hands after handling her. Why does my pet's ringworm look worse while on medication?

They can definitely look worse right before they get better. This happens when the body pushes out the old/diseased skin and hair while the new/healthy skin and hair grows in. Oral medication is very effective for ringworm and not prone to resistance like some bacterial infections, so I doubt it's getting worse. It's also a good sign if it's just the existing lesions that look worse; rather than there being new lesions. If new lesions are seen, then this would indicate that the treatment is not working and would require a recheck by your veterinarian. I hope that helps and Buttercup gets better soon.
