Why is my outdoor cat's fungal infection worsening despite treatment?

This can take several weeks to months as the skin and coat need to heal after the fungal infection is resolved. We cannot prescribe medication but you can bathe her in a cat labeled iodine or fungal shampoo twice weekly. Cats are very sensitive to medication so do not use anything on your kitten unless it is specifically labeled as safe for kittens. Check at you pet store and they should be able to help you find a safe shampoo for Misty. I recommend cleaning the bedding also and washing your hands after playing with Misty. Usually as the kitten grows up they have better immunity and they will start to heal the skin on their own too. If after bathing the fungal infection isn't improved then take her to your local veterinarian for treatment. While it may clear up in a week or so, it’s not uncommon to be a bit of a longer battle for some, and sometimes difficult to clear. I hate to hear that Boo has ringworm. The main problem with spreading is due to the spores of the fungus found in the environment. The spores are attached to pieces of shedding hair and can be active in the environment for months in ideal conditions. Environmental clean up is a must to control this fungus. As far as Boo himself goes, the topical treatments will help to remove the contagious spores faster and the oral medications will help to kill the fungus faster which will result in less spores. Unfortunately, Boo is considered contagious until he has two negative cultures done 1 week apart. Most cats will be start re-testing for ringworm 2-4 weeks after initial diagnosis. If the area is still glowing even if you have treated for 2 weeks, I still recommend continuing treatment and would state that Chloe does in fact still have ringworm. I have seen some animals needing treatment for 4-6 weeks with oral medication and topical. Sometimes scabs and dandruff can glow under the light and it can appear that the area is glowing when in fact it is just the scabbing or dandruff. If it is truly the skin lesion then I typically have clients treat for another 2 weeks and recheck again. Poor Greyshi. When a cat has ringworm, one of the most important things is to disinfect the environment. That's because ringworm spores live up to 18 months in the environment, so if you don't disinfect it, it will be a continuing source of ringworm. Hello. Yes, sometimes ringworm can be stubborn. If your cat has numerous lesions, or they are along the eyes and mouth, your cat should be on an oral antifungal medication. Also, cats will often lick the medication off as soon as you apply it, so it is not effective. If you are not using an Elizabethan collar, that could help prevent licking. Cases that do not respond to topical treatment often do better with a prescription oral antifungal. I would also make sure that it is actually ringworm. It may need to be rechecked by your veterinarian. Thank you

I am so sorry you having to deal with ringworm. It can be very frustrating to cure, because even cats that don't have symptoms can still harbor the fungus in their coats. Healthy adult cats will usually clear the fungus on their own with time, though it could take several months. You may talk to your vet about options, such as medical boarding, where Milo could be kept and treated so that you didn't have to chase him around the house. This will hopefully help clear the fungus sooner than later. Another option is to compound the oral medications into a cat treat that you may be able to feed to Milo, though you will have to watch him closely to make sure he eats it and not one of the other cats.
